May I remind you your left arm is still beaten up badly from the plane crash, and that is your "writing hand" to put it into layman's terms.
( just so you aren't dispirited, you can open the hatch with your items on hand, there is a way )

try the crowbar.

You try jamming the crowbar in the lock, and you do have some initial success with some click noises, but the lock fails to unlock. Perhaps if you used another item in conjunction?

You climb down the ladder into a very dark hallway. It is very dimly lit.

A. Feel around for any possible light switches or similar.
B. Keep your rifle ready.
C. Keep your sidearm ready.
D. Climb back up.

Your hand comes along a snaky,smooth texture, and a jingling sound vibrates through the air. You pull the chain and the room is alit.
You see a chest in the corner, a few drawers and a piece of paper stapeled to the wall.

B. Open drawers.
C. Examine paper.
D. Return above ground.

You look at the paper.

It reads:

It's clearly a riddle of some sort. You put it in your bag.
