"You will join the 2v2 ladder with a partner, and you'll always have the same partner. You won't be able to join the ladder twice with different partners, as this would present problems when it comes time for you to play against yourself."
How about when calculating the next opponent for a given team, you just don't consider other teams containing that team's players? Is there a compelling reason that every team has to be able to play every other team?

The ladder is in serious flux right now until enough players and games are played to balance things out. It will take time for enough data to be formed to normalize positions.

I have a lot of room to improve my 1v1 game. I guess I wasn't prepared for the caliber of players that tend to sign up for membership. I've had good success against other noobs and random opponents, but I think the average level of skill on the ladder is just that much higher than the general Warlight population. It's bringing down my 1v1 %, that's for sure! My hope is that in playing games against skillful members on the ladder (and reviewing my mistakes after a loss) that my game will improve, and so will my rankings. One can always hope, right?

While I find the idea of random partners on a 2v2 ladder intriguing, I think it would end up being very frustrating to play out consistently. I think a good 50% of your chance of success as a team depends implicitly on the chemistry and communication you have with your partner(s) and making that a complete shot in the dark every new game could end up being not so fun...
Then again, if you paired up team partners based on a ranking system similar to the current ladder format and matched like rankings together, you would end up playing with people similar to your skill level which might alleviate some of that awkward potential (however this would also obviously result in low ranked players playing with other low ranked players, thus making it potentially more difficult to improve your ranking if you started off poorly).
Some kind of AI clause would definitely need to be put in place tho for teams in cases where one person gets auto-booted so the other isn't left completely hung out to dry.
