What I think people must stop doing to ensure long lasting peace, and no more insults that would potentially escalate, is to not generalise. Some people come specifically onto threads discussing diplomacy, to downgrade it and say stuff such as "Diplomacy is not true Warlight. Let's play 1v1!" When what the person was looking for, was probably a discussion on how to improve diplomacy games, perhaps with good prereqs, or finding a community to play games with and get invites. Instead some people go out of their way to say "Diplomacy is bad then, and bad now. Fact" or something completely unrelated, just because they feel the need to do it.
Comparatively, I'm yet to see a thread about competitive, strategic gameplay where someone goes out of their way to say "Strategy is bad and useless. Set up a diplomacy game with me and my friends and we will have fun." Please link me a thread or two devoted to strategic discussion, where people, not favouring strategic gamely, come to downgrade it.
But ultimately, diplomacy players and strategic players must learn to coexist and learn more about them, to try and get the best of both worlds. This is what I have done, and after making a big effort to improve my strategy, I've seen it in a whole new light and find it very entertaining. You have to think about every move with lots of care. What should I do first? What card should I use, does this move need to be delayed? How can I expand most efficiently? When should I expand, or when should I try to play cat & mouse? For diplomacy, it is the thrill for me playing games throughout history, and in the future, and in alternate realms that is most fun. Especially when you get to know a community to play many games with, you can have laughs upon laughs with them and have lots of fun playing with them as well. ^_^
