I had an interesting outcome. I went through with the whole video and I got half of the effects described. At the end I saw the green vertical lines but I didnt see any red for the horizontal.

It's faked. it's why clement atlee put "How Stupid are warlight Players".

The end picture has been altered...

Honestly though, how has it been altered? I haven't been through the process but skipping to the end it's just black lines on a white background so seeing colours on there after the whole thing without alteration seems to be there.

Unless I'm missing something of course.

No, it's real: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCollough_effect
The "How stupid are WarLight players?" title was a test to see how many of you would watch it despite given the warning.
Also, the end picture was not altered. I didn't try it myself, I've watched up until the warning came on and then skipped to the end. The end image is the same as the original image.

Eh. Could have been a good video or a bad one. No real way to tell without clicking the link. Its like mining for gold. People think you're stupid till you hit the vein.

But what do I know? Im just a chubby kid.

Except for I skipped to the end too, never watched the video, and i see green and red lines.

What I think is that because you've been watching the red/green for straight so long, it just makes whats present more noticeable...

If I had to take a guess, it's roughly equivalent to the following effect :

Look at a lamp, or a ceiling light (be it implanted in the ceiling or hanging from your fan). If it hurts, immediately look away. If you notice, there's now a certain purple/black-figure that wanders around your vision field. Seeing that light was very bright and now it's a little hard to "un-see". Like the red and green lines test, doing this can be pretty bad for your vision, especially in bouts longer than 15 seconds - 1 minute. Like I said, just a quick glance or a short stare of 5 seconds can produce the effect for a few minutes.

That's just burning your retina (less extreme than it sounds), but I think you're on the right track.

The difference here would be that the McCollough effect is purported to last much longer than simple 'burning' of an image in the retina, which usually lasts max a couple hours, certainly less than a day (assuming no permanent damage from UV/etc.).

There would need to be something going on other than simple exhaustion of the retinal pigments. I'm guessing there is some level of learning going on within the brain's low-level visual cortex where things like line orientations are discerned. If that is the case, this would be an example of a 'visual' illusion, rather than a simple 'optical' illusion. Not sure if such a distinction is widely used or not.

To prove to yourself that the effect is real and not from an altered image, tilt your head 90 degrees and you'll see the green/red patches swap.
