It would actually be more effective to exterminate the women and children, and leave the men for work. The logic:

1) Sharply reducing a population is best achieved by attacking its reproductive abilities. Men are sterile without a female counterpart, and with no children surviving long enough to reach a productive age, the numbers will correct themselves over time, automatically.

2) Men are, generally, more useful in factory work.
