Anyway I appear to be somewhat late to the party but try to at least introduce yourself to one person and if you can't think of something to say just ask questions, most people like to talk about themselves.

This is quite important. Stay yourself and let friendships grow. Don`t force them.

Seems like your main problem is confidence, but good news! The more you practice the better it`ll go :D So just start making conversations (little tip: don`t start with the "popular kids" but just with the normal kids. They are often much nicer to shy people)

Not sure if i said already, but talking to girls is an acquired skill. It's important to know that 9/10 the girl is not going to act an awful lot different than a guy. Just stay the hell away from goth girls. *shiver*

Personal experience, being apologetic, polite and nodding/smiling when they're talking helps. You might have to do a few corny things, like setting things up so that their binder falls over and you bump into each other picking up the mess etc.

Last of all, go with the flow.
