Realistic meaning that it's based on reality. World maps, maps of Europe and various countries, etc. are realistic. Maps like this aren't:
https://www.warlight.net/Map/5745-Battle-Islands-VFor space maps, very few on Warlight are realistic. Examples of non-realistic space-related maps:
It doesn't even have to be the whole galaxy, it could just include nearby stars. Since we're inside the galaxy, it's kinda hard to get a 'bird's eye view' of it. But you could just use the night sky itself, with perhaps the closest 20, 50, or 100 stars as the main territories. See
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nearest_stars_and_brown_dwarfsHeck, even a map based on our made-up constellations but accurately depicting the night sky would be more realistic than most space maps. This one goes for it, but is pretty ugly, IMO:
https://www.warlight.net/Map/5197-Constellation-Map This one is similar:
https://www.warlight.net/Map/2850-ConstellationMaybe instead of making the stars territories, you could use the stars as the vertices of territory polygons and have the territories be the regions between stars.
How do you make a realistic Earth-based map? Take a map of Earth and plot it to SVG. How to make a realistic space based map? Same thing. Take a map of space (sky's eye view, or perhaps use a similar spiral galaxy as a stand-in for our galaxy) and plot it to SVG.
Actually, just googling turned up some interesting results:
