No problem with that, the problem probably is that they haven´t been alone (as you said), they have been invaded, robbed, killed, women have been raped, and many of them have been taken as slaves to other parts of the world by some other people who managed to "develope" on their own. So what is to develope or not? maybe there are different points of view about that.
Slavery existed in Africa much before europeans arrived. Europeans were the last ones to practice slavery and the first ones to abolish it. Africa was poor before that ocurred. African countries that have been more european, like south africa or egypt are the richest ones.
