In the style of

and
https://www.warlight.net/Map/17599-Asia-Population-Density-bonuses
possibly balanced for GDP/ PPP per capita to mitigate huge populations?
using EU4 style uninhabited voids
inserts/ blown up areas for greater densities (eastern seaboard, asia)
I have little map making experience, but would be happy to help build one

this should definetly be done, but you should use nominal gdp values instead of population values, otherwise it will become hugely unbalanced.

the first map in this last post of your does not seem too umbalanced, you would only need to divide everything in more smaller regions (especially in the third world)... and perhaps more strenght to russia, that seems underpowered when counting only economy...

do you think that USA and china look too strong in this map?

as a general starting point it seems good enough for a contemporary world map balance of powers

yes, russia would get a city in the east.
personally I think having every nation start with 3 100pt cities and +1 per territory works best for diplomacies
possibly having lots of -1 single bonuses in crappy north russia and africa could work

If you do it by GDP then Australia, South America,Siberia and Africa get tiny.
If you do it by population then Africa and South America is big, but Australia and Siberia are still tiny.

you could do it by area, but that leaves Ireland with next to nothing...
