You should be able to go back to the last turn quickly. you can press g and go to the beginning, but with big games it takes a while to move the thing.

Or at least you can search a turn.

If you press the left hand arrow key, you go back 1 turn in history. Also, the up and down arrow keys take you through each individual order that happened within a turn.
