@Tchaikovsky: independence wouldn't really work; both India + Pakistan clearly wanted it (enough to fight 3 wars over it- '47, '65, Kargil) and sovereignty didn't really work out for princely states/Hyderabad/etc. In the end, they'd have to choose.

Really, though, I hate how people are getting defensive when this sort of dialogue is critical to cultures' self-improvement. It's a bit chauvinistic to act like the culture you come from is exempt from making mistakes and attempt to justify every little thing it got wrong- Nehru fucked up the economy (not to mention diplomacy/military strategy, especially in the Indo-Chinese war) and is likely responsible for a lot of poverty today, Indira Gandhi was just a couple nanometers away from dictatorship, the caste system took away economic mobility from a lot of people, etc. etc.- acknowledging failures in the past (while remaining appreciative of your actual accomplishments) is how you move forward into the future.

LOL I hate when you use straw-man knyte because you're way smarter than that!! I never said anywhere (literally try to quote me) that India has never made mistakes. I'll admit one right here: WE ARE SHIT WHEN IT COMES TO WOMEN'S RIGHTS. My temple still forces women into the back (just as an example)...and women aren't allowed to cross into the men's side of the temple either.

Also I like how you note that many if not all of the modern problems attributed to India are due to lasting residual effects of Gandhi-Indian National Congress policies. With BJP in power (and hopefully for many more election cycles) Achhe din aane waale hain (good days will come).

I couldn't agree more...but more off than not all you seem to care about is shitting on India without acknowledging any of its achievement (which I apologize but I have little toleration for). If I had to guess you seem ashamed of being Indian (just my perception, although it may not be true)...which is really sad because so many Indian-American youths have left their cultural identity in the trashcan to adopt America's standards, moralities, and ways-of-living.

Honestly, the worst civilization of all time is the Hebrews.

Not because I'm anti-semetic, but the Hebrews invented the monotheistic deity that has been the excuse for hundreds of thousands of wars, acts of violence, slaughters, genocides, and attacks.

That being is now worshiped by billions, with hundreds of different sects that believe they have the right interpretation of this god. Allow me to list some of the atrocities done in this god's name:

The Crusades
Spanish Inquisition
Forced conversion of native Americans and Africans
Destruction of the Buddha statues
Sack of Constantinople
Thirty Years War
Attacks by ISIS and other Islamic terror groups
Persecution of Jews, Christians, and Muslims worldwide across the centuries
French Wars of Religion
The Holocaust
And so forth. Hundreds of millions dead. Killed in the most inhumane ways possible. All because one group of Ancient Canaanites decided to have one all-powerful, all-knowing, all-present deity.

Well that depends. History has been twisted too much. And there are too many variables and points of divergence in the past. Probably the things you mentioned would've happened anyway, just under a different excuse.
Perhaps Zoroastrianism, the first major monotheistic religion, would've spread from Persia and into Arabia, the Levant and Europe, were it not for the Abrahamic religions. Who knows?

Oh my only point was that 99% of the world is better than Saudi Arabia. Really the only thing I was glad about was that when people think "List of Evil Things Civilizations Have Done" nothing that India has ever done ever really comes to the forefront of the mind. That's something to be slightly-proud of, although I am sure there are some civilizations that have even cleaner records.

Well, let's get to the root of the issue: People are f***ed up and want power.

So pretty much every society to have ever existed did some wrong things, and as such this list will most likely be impossible to complete

So, we now have a nationalism buisness going on in this thread in which everyone is trying to prove that their nationality has a cleaner record than the others, or that the good they did makes up for the bad.

please use the geographer's definition of nationality for the above portions.
