i was drawing the outline of the map and because of all the little curves inkscape was lagging heaps,so i decided to draw half of the outline, simplify that and then draw the other half, simplify it and union the 2. When i try to union the 2 lines it deletes part of one of the lines and draws a line from the end of one line and the end of the other from where its been deleted

Use the beizer curve tool (the one which looks like a quill) instead of the pencil.

If you're drawing an outline and have two halves/pieces to it that you wish to connect, use the Node Tool (F2) to select the two nodes you wish to join and use the tool controls to either 'Join selected nodes' or 'Join selected endnodes with a new segment'.

Each tool's tool controls are located above the horizontal ruler. If you are unsure of what ruler I'm referring to use CTRL + R to toggle the ruler. When using the Node Tool, I highly recommend enabling the second to last toggle of the tool controls (from the right), to show bezier handles. With these handles you can accurately define the curvature of any curved line segment.

Speaking of curves, I sometimes use the bezier tool to position each node with a single click, and then the Node Tool to drag each line segment into the desired curve wherever necessary. I find it creates a similar curved path, often with fewer nodes than had it been drawn with the pencil.

When using divide (CTRL + /), you are not really meant to draw both the bonus and each territory's full outline. If you are dividing bonuses into territories, you would not be drawing the actual territory but instead the line for each territory divide. Could you send an image of the object being divided and the object you're dividing with? Below is an example showing a simple random bonus and each dividing line. You can ignore the shades of grey; they are purely to show each resulting territory.

Notice the order the division happens. This is because the dividing line must pass completely
through the object (or beyond). I could not have done any division but the red one first, then
the blue, then green, then yellow.

The object you divide with should be a line 'on top of' the object being divided, and this 'object on top' (line) is what should be deleted after the division, leaving you with the bottom divided object.

The following image may help; it shows a few results of division when the dividing object is/isn't on top. Since your bonus is being completely deleted, I suspect yours could be case number 1. Again it would be more helpful if I could see what the problem is.

Notice how cases 2,4 and 6 are the desired effect, and the line is on top in each instance of 'before'.
