Nothing will be saved.
500 years from now, internet will probably be gone. Imagine all the data, all the information and photos and other such pieces of culture. With them on the internet, when the internet falls, so will the information.

So will a lot if literature and poetry. With more and more of it being presented via the Internet, it could be lost.

I'm not saying back up everything, but it's an interesting thought. With a society so based on computers, what will archaeologists 500 years from now dig up? They can't access the computers, the Internet will be down, it'll just be a piece of plastic and metal.

Tbh I worry about losing stuff as well. I'm a bit of a data hoarder it's stupid really as I don't have off-site backup disks anyway so I'd lose everything anyway. Still makes me feel better.

^Same here. I finally bought a Seagate Backup Hard Drives for pictures/files/powerpoints/notes/essays/research files. Now whenever I touch it I'm just afraid I'm going to drop it and break it.

I mean I guess it is a fear. But I don't see a reason why the Internet would just be gone.

you know the only way historians will not know that humans are racist sexist homophobic pricks is if ALL history was erased, books DVDS, hard drives, and then word of mouth all gotta go.
Have you seen what people have done in the past.

the Internet won't just go away or be shut down

and if it did, all of its information is still stored on various servers, so it would be possible to "dig up" this culture

We keep things. I have a chest of drawers in my house that's close to 500 years old (about 430 years old, we put a TV on it).

IF human civilization were to collapse and that there was no electricity to allow for internet connections, most data would NOT be lost. Like Epicular said, data is stored on various servers and computers. After a very long time, the computers may break down or be destroyed by natural processes. Smaller devices, such as hard drives, could survive and be buried underground.
Plus, look at all the space junk in the near vicinity of Earth. I am pretty sure that data would not get past humans for too long.

The fear is not that all data is lost due to some massive disaster but the gradual loss of information you enjoyed. Smaller websites close, videos get taken down people delete work they uploaded ect.
