I am descended of British colonists in the 1600's. The town I grew up in is named after a town in England. I can correctly pronounce Worcester, MA. I know that Leicester is at the top of the EPL table and that you guys don't give a crap about American football even though we try and shove it down your throat. Who has more of a claim to this tourney, me or Plat?

It is part of Great Britain, but not Britain.

Britain only refers to England and Wales.
Great Britain refers to England, Wales and Scotland.
The UK is Great Britain and Northern Ireland (but not Ireland)

It's confusing i know :D

Bonsai, I would say you qualify! More than Plat anyway :D

It's not confusing, it's simple, but since when did "Britain" only refer to just England and Wales? That's never been the case unless you're just making stuff up, see the image I just posted for clarification.

Scotland is both part of Great Britian and the British Isles, it's as much a part of Britain as anything can be.

But no Scot actually considers themself British.

Walk up to a Scot, and say "what country do you come from?" They will NOT say "UK" or "Great Britain", they'll say "Scotland"

"Britain" is usually taken as short for "Great Britian" but it doesn't really mean anything, it could mean the British Isles just as much, it depends on context more than anything.

Some people also consider it to refer to the UK, but as that's something that changes over time I don't think that's a very accurate use of the word.

Ox, that's the same in England, but we're also not retarded enough to not be aware that we are also part of the UK and also on a British isle.

I don't consider myself to be European either, but we're in the EU, and on the European continental shelf, so I'm not retarded enough to completly deny it.

None of this matters anyways, I'm from the North of Ireland therefore I'm in the UK. Bonsai has as much claim to being English as he does being the King of Uganda..

Is Great Britain the same as Britain?

Great Britain and Britain do not mean the same thing.

Great Britain is made up of Scotland, England and Wales, where as Britain is just England and Wales. The name Britain goes back to Roman times when they called England and Wales "Britannia" (or "Britannia Major", to distinguished from "Britannia Minor", ie Brittany in France). The Roman province of Britannia only covered the areas of modern England and Wales. The area of modern Scotland was never finally conquered.

Also, Britain is not a country, it's collection of islands, so why would they say Britian in answer to the question of what county they are from? The answer can only be Scotland or UK. You seem be making a strawman argument.

Ayyyyy, suck on that, Latins. Freedom!

EDIT: Fleecemaster, I don't think you realise how dumb what you're saying is.

I have the choice to label myself "Scottish" or "British". The demonym of the UK, can't be "United Kingdomese", can it? So, obviously people say "British". Is it that hard to grasp? Some people... o_o

Ill play. Preference for start ME SR. I think anybody with UK flag should be accepted as I guess the point is to see who are the best carrier of the flag. Then other countries should do that so winners meet each others. :-))
