Welcome to Turn 6 of The Impaller versus The World, a game that everyone gets to participate in! For more information about the game, view this blog post.

The winning item from last time was number 5. Defend against The Impaller in South America, and try to take him out with a delayed attack. Instructions: Deploy 6 to Brazil. and 6 to Colombia. Play the delay card. Take Finland with the two 2s from Murmansk and Moscow. Transfer the 1 from Norway to Finland. Attack Venezeula with 1 from Cuba, then 8 from Colombia and then 8 from Brazil.

Here's what we did:

Here's the outcome:

  • The Impaller: Deploy 12 to Venezuela

  • The World: Deploy 6 to Brazil

  • The World: Deploy 6 to Colombia

  • The World plays an order delay card

  • The World: 2 armies failed to take Finland from Murmansk. 1 attacking armies killed, 1 defending armies killed.

  • The World: 2 armies captured Finland from Moscow. 1 attacking armies killed, 1 defending armies killed.

  • The World: 1 army transferred to Finland from Norway

  • The World: 1 army failed to take Venezuela from Cuba. 1 attacking armies killed, 0 defending armies killed.

  • The World: 8 armies failed to take Venezuela from Colombia. 8 attacking armies killed, 5 defending armies killed.

  • The World: 8 armies failed to take Venezuela from Brazil. 6 attacking armies killed, 4 defending armies killed.

  • The World received an Order Priority card

Here are our options:

  1. Goal: Gain a border with the East Africa bonus, which we assume Impaller has, to try and break it next turn.
-Deploy 12 to Novolazerevskaya. Attack South Africa with 12. Transfer 1 from Murmansk to Finland.

  2. Goal: Gain control of the Scandanavia bonus. Enter Africa.
-Deploy 3 to Finland, 7 to Norway and 2 to Brazil. Attack Sweden with 4. Attack Svalbard with 7. Attack Nigeria with 4. Transfer 1 from Murmansk to Norway.

  3. Goal: Gain control of the Scandanavia bonus, albeit with less certainty, and head towards the India bonus.
-Deploy 2 to Finland, 6 to Norway and 4 to Ufa. Transfer 2 to Argentina. Attack Sweden with 3. Attack Svalbard with 6. Attack Eastern Kazakhstan with 4. Transfer 1 to Norway from Murmansk.

  4. Goal: Gain control of the Scandanavia bonus, albeit with less certainty, and enter Africa to gain a border with the East Africa bonus.
-Deploy 2 to Finland, 6 to Norway and 4 to Novolazerevskaya. Transfer 2 to Argentina. Attack Sweden with 3. Attack Svalbard with 6. Attack South Africa with 4. Transfer 1 to Norway from Murmansk.

  5. Goal: Gain control of the Scandanavia bonus, albeit with less certainty, enter Africa to gain a border with the East Africa bonus and give up on South America by blockading Argentina.
-Deploy 2 to Finland, 6 to Norway and 4 to Novolazerevskaya. Transfer 2 to Argentina. Attack Sweden with 3. Attack Svalbard with 6. Transfer 1 to Norway from Murmansk. Attack South Africa with 4. Blockade Argentina.

Looks like our luck finally truned. We lost a 60% attack and an 80% attack. Good news is he probably missed another card piece, bad news is that was a hugely net negative turn at -6.

Looks like we pick up Scan and put the rest into holding SA this turn. 7, 3 and 2. #2 without the move into EA.

I don't like pulling out of SA and killing the neutral, because Imp is likely to deploy heavily there use his delay (which he didn't use last turn). And then expand to Brazil and Columbia.

-Deploy 3 to Finland, 7 to Norway and 2 to Brazil. Nigeria with 4. Attack Sweden with 4. Attack Svalbard with 7. Transfer 1 from Murmansk to Norway.

Before you start on EA, if Imp is in EA, don't you think it far more likely he'd go to South Africa to bust Antartica then work his way across Africa to hit Brazil? If we want that bust we should go through SA as well. It might even make sense to forgo Scan to hit South Africa with a stack. Assuming everyone thinks Imp's in EA. Cause if he's not there that strategy could seriously backfire.

That was a bad turn for sure -- We should've gone for Scan or loaded up for a 13 and 3 attacks instead of 8 and 8. Imp has played it safe with putting 100% into Venesuela twice and this time did no attacks

Why not hightail it toward India? We know he has that, and its possible he has Indonesia instead of East Africa. It will take one round longer to get than by going through South Africa, but he also probably assumes we are in West Russia and will head towards us sooner rather than later. It would be nicer to meet him in the Caucaucus than at our doorstep, no?

Obviously there is no way to be certain, but I feel like we would have seen him in South Africa already to break our Antarctica bonus if he was in East Africa. I'd put it somewhere around a 50-50 chance.

I guess I am saying I support Option 3.

We know he has deployed all his armies the last two turns in SA -- so he hasn't expanded anywhere. I suspect he will not give up on holding SA again this turn. We can hit it with 14 (8.4). So I assume he'll deploy at least enough to block that attack, use delay and then hit somewhere adjacent with 2(s). That requires him to deply at least 7 there. He'll have max 5 left to go elsewhere. He might deploy more into SA in the hopes of taking that bonus for himself or he might deploy up to 5 elsewhere for a mvoe into South Africa or Causacus -- beats me which one he thinks is best -- but one of those choices seems very likely.

Given the delay we will likely walk into a bad exchange if we go to South Africa with 4 or 5 and then he hits it with 5 after us.

But (and I am mostly playing Devil's advocate here to get a discussion going because I really like this series) wouldn't you think that if he was in East Africa, he wouldnt have so vigorously held onto South America when he could have an easy bust in Antarctica? We would gain 1 troops per round, but there is also a not-so-long path to south america from antarctica or through west africa for busting of south america purposes.

not really -- if he left SA he goes down -4 immediately when we take it and we go immediately at his bonuses. I think he loses quickly under that scenerio. the way he played it he got the block and managed to go up net 6 in one turn -- effectively erasing our earlier income advantages.

Obviously I was hoping that he'd put at least a couple of armies somewhere else and/or attack us to get the card piece -- by doing nothing but stacking in the block in SA for 2 rounds he got a tremendous gain.

He probably moved his spare armies together to do another attack somewhere else. Now we're wasting our turns and he's growing. I hate attacking him there every turn. The goal is to outgrow him and protect our holdings while we move into position to threaten his bonuses. He has position on our bonuses, and he may be growing, while we are nowhere near his bonuses, and are losing armies each turn with fruitless attacks.

And if he is in east africa, he probably had enough spare armies in east africa to be close this turn. With our disastrous turn last turn, he can beat us into west africa with a good sized army if he wants. Any move on west africa is to prevent him from getting another four point bonus, although it's possible he's working on asia/indo instead.

Two is the best of the choices, but its got flaws. I prefer the modified two where the transfer of 1 to Norway happens before any move in Brazil, where we can take advantage of the delay. I also don't love the push to WA.

Picture next turn if Imp does a delayed expansion with at least 2 in SA. He has Venesuela, Columbia and Brazil and we have nothing but a 1 in argentina -- how much good is 2 or 3 in East Africa to us then?

Which is why 3 days ago I suggested #2 without the move into Nigeria:

-Deploy 3 to Finland, 7 to Norway and 2 to Brazil. Nigeria with 4. Attack Sweden with 4. Attack Svalbard with 7. Transfer 1 from Murmansk to Norway.

Fizz, would you at least add the option before you close voting. Otherwise it's #2 and a probable bad result.

Duke, I will add your proposal as Option #6.

I assume you want it to read (yours still had Nigeria in there):

Deploy 3 to Finland, 7 to Norway and 2 to Brazil. Attack Sweden with 4. Attack Svalbard with 7. Transfer 1 from Murmansk to Norway.

Yes please. The inclusion of Nigeria before was inadvertant. I was arguing against going into Africa.

No proper input here but I've been following this. It's almost The Impaller vs Duke + a few others.
I can't wait to see the final result.

I was hoping to have it up before I left on a business trip, but didn't end up having time. I get back late tomorrow and will have the next turn up late tomorrow (depending on what time I end up getting back home), or Thursday morning. I apologize for the delay.

And that's the week. Don't expect people to be on top of their moves over memorial day weekend (I'm gone at least two days without access). So give it another week I guess.
