I just checked my profile to see the new turn speed data -- very nice improvements Randy. I also noted that my booting percentage has skyrocketed. While 3% is still low, it was 1% a month ago. I realized that it's the autoboot feature. I often let games where I would otherwise surrender become losses by autoboot. That's true in around half my losses over the last month in 1x1 games.
I don't know if anyone uses boot percentage in deciding whether to play with someone, but perhaps it should be tweaked. Maybe break out autoboots? or maybe breakout boots in non 1x1 games (indicating that you perhaps let down a teammate)?
Over time, my boot percentage will continue to approach my loss percentage until it levels out somewhere around half of games I lose. Not sure if that's significant, but thought I'd mention it.

Why not just surrender in those games? Waiting for autoboot in a ladder or tournament game has a direct detrimental effect on your opponent. In a pickup game, it has no meaningful effect, but it is an annoyance.

"direct detrimental effect on your opponent" -- you should explain this as it makes no sense to me. The most an opponent "loses" is 1/5 of the available slots for new games for the period of time between when surrender would occur and when autoboot occurs, which cannot exceed 72 hours. This seems an entirely di minimus effect not a "direct detrimental effect".
Any in many instances even this detriment would be illusory as there will be no available fifth game to start when that one ends. A player in the top ten or bottom 10 (i.e. the majority of players on the 2x2 ladder) often has trouble getting to five games (I've waited days to get to four).

More likley you are complaining about slow play with regard to holding a higher position on a ladder -- which is an entirely different issue than using autoboot as opposed to surrender and which has been covered extensively on the ladder forum (see: Doushi).

Why wouldn't you just surrender? Sounds like it would solve the problem your complaining about.

I'm not talking about the Doushi fiasco. I'm talking about holding up another game from starting. What if someone only wants to play one game at a time? Are they supposed to realize you're quitting by autoboot and change their settings to 2 games, so they can get another game right away? But then remember to change it back to 1 game, so they don't get a second game when autoboot kicks in?
A game should end when it's over, not 3 days after it's over when the autoboot catches up.
Do you even mention in chat "gg" or something to indicate you've given up on the game?

the analogy fails because no one I play is sitting watching the game. I am playing 3 day/turn games. You assume I've decided to surrender and wait out of spite, this is not the case. It's just a matter of not putting a turn in when you're in a tough spot so you can think about it, then deciding to let it go when the timer is close to running out. Most of the time I'm within a few hours of the deadline when I make that decision. I have way over 600 games and 18 boots, this is not exactly happenning in every game I play, but I noted it happened a few times and commented on it. Y'all are highjacking my post and turning it into a very different problem.

^^^ then you make your move and surrender the next turn. that way your opponent has 3 days to see your surrender rather than 3 hours

Autoboots (or all boots for that matter) should simply count as losses.

I always use boot percentage limitation with open seats. Usually 30%. Even that is very generous. . . .

your letting someone, who has been inactive for 200+ days know your opinion?
If a discussion is still active and it has been less then a month since the last post then I do not care.
This thread was finished around 10 months ago, this thread is done.
Of course this is my personal opinion on when it is okay to revive threads, but still I use the homepage to check up on what threads are busy and you helped clutter it up.
