So a couple months back, I was playing a "nuclear war" diplo, and I wondered where the nuclear war part was.

It gave me the idea for a nuke card; kind of like a blockade card, except you play it on someone else's territories. The selected territory and all bordering territories will be blockaded (i.e. on the Hex Earth map, if I nuked Oklahoma City, Oklahoma City and all bordering territories (Forth Worth, Dallas, Missouri, Kansas City, Central Kansas, Western Oklahoma) would be blockaded.) Like the blockade card, it could be customized to cause the armies to double, triple, etc. You could also customize the blast radius, making small nukes (one territory blockaded) medium nukes (one territory and all bordering territories blockaded) and large nukes (like the medium nukes, but one layer bigger).

Using this card, diplos would and could be much more fun and realistic to play, and, when used right, it could cripple an entire empire (just imagine if you hit someone's huge stack, someone's commander, or on the border between two large bonuses).

I know that the likelihood of this card actually becoming a thing is slim, but I must say that it would be very fun. And Fizzer, though you'll probably never see this, I have to ask that you don't restrict this card to members, as not all of us can afford it (assuming you would ever even consider making it, of course.)

It would be an awesome addition to diplos (when used correctly, anyway; you don't want to get too many of these cards per turn).

So who wants to sign the petition to bring this card into existence? :D

WOuld a bomb card do? That say, kills 50% of the troops in the bombed territory.

TBest, I've only played one game with bomb cards, so correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you only use bomb cards on territories you border? And even if that's not the case, the difference is that a bomb card kills half; a nuke card, were it real, would blockade the territories and render them useless until the blockades could be broken down.

Most nuclear war diplos I've been in have had sanction cards for 100% lasting 5000 turns. You start with one and gain no pieces per turn.

A heck of a lot easier to use than a new OP card.

i would suggest the nuke card to do this

-you pick any territory on the map
-only may be used if fog is set to no fog or light fog
-the territory selected is blockaded and the number of troops on it would double
-any adjacent territory to the one selected would lose half the troops on it
-if any player would only own 1 land the nuke card would destroy all armies in the land instead of turning it neutral

i think that these rules for the nuke card would better simulate how nukes actually work in the way that the initial site of impact would be almost inhabitable while surrounding areas would be affected in a big way due to radiation spreading

THAT IS A TERRABLE IDEA. People would use it for trolling

A player has 1 territory left, well good bye them.
Or use it to break your enemies big bonuses than annihilate them.
If you restrict it so its variables are set and number of pieces per card to a minimum of e.g. 20. Then it might work

Rendering an enemy territory neutral or blockaded is far too overpowered. I am certain we'll never have a card that does anything like that. The best idea I've seen for a new nuke card is in fact similar to the bomb card but with a slight modification:

  • Reduce the armies in a nuked territory to X%
  • Reduce the armies in territories bordering the nuked territory by Y% where Y is some fraction of X.
Thus nuking a territory you border can cause you to suffer the effects of the nuke, as you should, and so a bomb card still has its uses. Nukes however can be used when an enemy is stacking behind their borders, as is often the case in diplomacies.

Nuking 1's will of course have no effect. Not sure how you might consider that in "nuke role-play" but it's a crucial weakness of the card that prevents it being too powerful. Pretend you're nuking a desert or something...

Noob, but I must say I like Red Army's opinion. With One Army Stand Guard: Off, X could be set to 100%, allowing the bomber to take away a distant bonus for one turn. (Which the bombed would presumably take back the following turn, if possible.)

I'm not sure where I originally came across the idea I mentioned above, but as I understood it at the time, reducing the armies in the nuked territory doesn't change ownership of the territory to neutral. Even if One Army Stands Guard is off and it's reduced by 100% right to zero, the targeted player keeps their bonus.

The idea of being able to break any bonus of any player on the entire map is imo the whole reason OP's nuke idea is too overpowered to begin with. Reducing by 100% also seems a bit over powered to me. You could just use a spy/recon/surveillance card to find a hidden stack and completely destroy it... I was thinking of a maximum 75% and the surrounding territories reduced by roughly 25%. Doubt you'd see anything more than that. There's a reason the bomb card was made to kill only 50%.
