@Billy Walsh: As an oldschoool pro you are used to 16% luck weighted random but you should adapt your picking style more to no luck.
As a general guideline: - With no luck combos get less viable. I usually prefer complete map control. - With no luck the bigger bonuses get more viable. A strategy that involves only +3 bonuses seems pretty weak. - I also prefer first turn bonuses less with no luck involved. The benefit is that you never miss them however since the template is more about expansion afterwards you can't afford to chase shadows not knowing from which direction to expect your opponent to counter you.

@Billy Walsh:
Yeah having to deploy full force for the first two turns for your bonuses isn't that great when your opponent starts right next to you. When starting with immediate opponent contact I usually recommend deploying full force at his border and attacking him with 1 army first move. This has 2 advantages:
a) If he tries to dodge and you get first order his dodge move will fail.
b) If he attacks you full force later that turn he gets an inefficient attack of 7 leading him to lose 2 more armies than you instead of only 1. This isn't only a huge disadvantage for you opponent but in quite some circumstances it's then already game over after round one. In round 2 you would be free to hit him full force and the best he could achieve with full deployment is a break even leading to exactly the same stacks as before however he might have moved all his stacks first round so he won't get a card piece.
