The biggest downside to Reagan was that he did rack up debt, but it was nothing compared to the debt we accrue today. That, and we only went into debt because he increased spending to compete with the Soviet Union to bankrupt them, but he didn't want to do so by harshly taxing the American people. The American economy also improved vastly under him, and continued to improve even after he left (all the way to Clinton's presidency). Today, we have the taxes AND the increase in debt, and not much has been accomplished. I don't understand why people hate him so much, considering he was one of the most successful presidents we've ever had.

Not all conservatives are war-hawks. However, there are more than enough that are implicitly and many more who are sympathetic, even if its not their thing.

The Neo-Conservatives of the Bush administration are the most obvious example of conservative war hawks, even if they were a very very very small percentage of the Republican Party or of conservatives in general. Additionally, many conservatives have stronger opinions on domestic issues than foreign policy. The Bush administration allied the evangelical block in the Republican Party, strategically smart as they were the most powerful faction at the time. This meant that the Bush administration moved farther to the right on domestic issues that neocons would normally not really care about while the evangelicals were persuaded to become hawks.


In short, the only reason why the majority of conservatives hold hawkish foreign policy positions is because of the strong legacy of past hawks.
