Warlight used to be a fun game. Now it's all about money. What a surprise.

I appreciate that there are development and running costs, and the developers want reward for their efforts, BUT.......

Are in-game popup adverts really the answer?

Ah well, this game was fun while it lasted...

Oh, how much have you paid to play this game, I might ask? You see them on the internet and on TV, yet you complain about ads on an indie game?

We will not miss your complaining if you choose not to return.

I do fully realise that adverts are a necessary evil. The adverts pay for the running costs of the site.

What I don't understand is why the adverts have to pop up during game play so often and to such an extent that it ends up ruining the whole game play experience.

Far too many online games are being totally ruined by excessive advertising.

It would be nice if after the 100th time of closing the Star Wars advert the game would realise that I am just not interested. If I was contemplating joining STOWR then I would have by now.

Either buy a membership or get some ad-blocking software (at the expense of points) if it bothers you so much.

Advertisements create the opportunity for WarLight to be a free game. If ads didn't exist, or didn't work, then WarLight would have to be pay-only like most other games.

Given you've been playing for nearly two years and haven't purchased a membership to remove ads, I'm assuming you're not willing to pay. Therefore, you should view ads as the only thing that's letting you play at all.

WarLight costs me over $1000 per month just to keep the website up. This money has to come from somewhere, and if you're not willing to look at ads and not willing to pay, how do you expect the site to stay up?

I agree with Smiling Killer. Ads are bad. And paying for anything at all is bad. Fizzer should simply invest more time and money into this site so we are happier. He could also help me pay my mortgage, which would also increase my happiness.

To clarify,

I accept that adverts are a necessary evil. Website hosting doesn't come free, internet doesn't come free, development time doesn't come free.
I have been writing and designing software for the best part of thirty years and I sure as hell don't come free.
There are adverts on the side of this page which are perfectly acceptable.

What is annoying however is the adverts popping up during game play, obscuring parts of the map and affecting the performance of the game. Maybe the page layout could be changed slightly to make room for adverts, possibly making the map slightly smaller. Video adverts prior to the start of a game could be an idea.

The Star Wars: The Old Republic advert seems to be the main culprit for performance degredation. I have tried different browsers and although some are better than others this particular advert seems to be chewing CPU resources.

Fizzer has done an outstanding job building this game and it seems a shame that all this hard work is being affected by adverising.

I personally understand the necessity of ads. I wish they were less intrusive in the game (perhaps a square beneath the re-do orders button), but I can deal with them since I am currently unemployed and have no money in which to buy membership.

An unrelated concern of mine is:
I have a lousy internet connection, and occasionally an ad does not display due to lack of connection and I get a "don't use adblock" message.
I am not using adblock, but will I get punished if this occurs on a game I win?
(Luckily enough, this has only happened on 5 or so games, and I either lost or they were practice games. Otherwise I would know the answer myself.)

It may be a point to make the ads slightly annoying so you will invest in the game. I did it for that reason and it was more entertaining than other games that i would have had to pay $60 bucks to play at the time.

Many of the Ads are fine, the only thing that annoys is when it fails to display one making a box in the middle of your screen, and then decides to display one down the bottom not even a second after. This covers a bit of my screen for about 10-5 seconds. However, i think there's no much Fizzer can do about that.

TL;DR Ads are fine. Failed Ad popup + ads. Ewww

Yeah that annoys me when it fails and then shows the ad.Why fizzer are we being punished if an add fail and what is with the 5 second countdown or the need to tell us with an ad has failed. That failed pop up could boot people in the last 5 seconds and about to commit.

Have you not noticed that most ads pop up when you either refresh a page or commit your orders. Fizzer has tried to make them as unobtrusive as possible.

I got rid of most of mine in 'preferences' but maybe you can't do that if you're not a member. Compared to the price of bought games it seems pretty good value. I've had nearly 2 years of fun & always something new to try. Thanks Fizzer.
