Definitely going to be attacked next turn. I'm pushing out 32 per turn. Player in red is pushing out 24 per turn. Not sure on the numbers for the other two colors. I don't want to lose all my bonuses on the next turn and I don't want red to start expanding. The card I have is an airlift card. What do?

Thanks sergeants

Out.

I acknowledge your attempts in assisting my war efforts, but I believe that my nation needs to take a different approach at this time.

Thanks sergeant.

The short version is: you need to pick a strategy and stick with it. In an FFA like this, you can't just expect to win all the fights on all your borders. Decide where you want to win and where you can afford to lose, then follow through.

Ultimately, you want to minimize your borders with other players while maximizing theirs - the ideal position is a corner with just one neighbour, for example.

No, putting yourself in a corner is a shitty strategy 9 out of 10 times. For Ffas, you want your ennemies to be in corners, putting all their picks there, while you spread as much as possible yours so you can be sure you'll have safe income, while you can mess up with their income, for they were dumb enough to put all their picks in one region like you suggested.

TeamGuns,

I wasn't really talking about picks. We have a specific scenario we're looking at here, after all. :)

How would you put the strategy you just described into action in this particular situation? What action does that line of thinking suggest here?

He still shouldn't abandon one full region to focus another, I agree that he should yield ground at this point so he can fight back in another front, but a total reply of one region is just to abandon any hope of winning the game. You can't beat anyone if you fall back to a corner and hope the situation to get better by itself. By the time you decide to leave your hole, someone else stronger than you will be already knocking at your door.

Anyways, in your position, I'd pick a fight against light green, let the other two guys advance in the north, and use that stack to mess up a bit with orange. Maybe you can use some cards in the north (blockades can be more than helpful to protect income and delay your opponents).

Ha! I see. We're talking about the same thing, just in different terms.

My point was just that you can't expect to be winning (or holding steady, which is usually a bad sign) on all your fronts in an FFA. (Well, you can - but if you are, chances are you've already won.)

So, your advice to "pick a fight against _____, let the other two guys advance" is exactly the sort of thing I was thinking of when I said: "Decide where you want to win and where you can afford to lose, then follow through."

Sitting in a hole is never good. The advantage of a corner is precisely that you can expand rapidly (since you're working against an opponent who has to split his forces while you do not).

I think "hiding in a corner" is REALLY setting-specific. In "default" strategic warlight, being out in the open with lots of room to expand tends to win, since the highest production is the single most reliable predictor of victory.

In some other types of games, that's much less the case.

It might help to rephrase my "corner" advice as follows (since it has nothing to do with corners):

* The ideal situation is one where you have one border to worry about, with one opponent along that border.
* Meanwhile, the opponent you border should have three, four, or more borders with different opponents.

This makes sense after the initial "expansion" phase. For expansion, basically you just want the most options for expansion in locations as far as possible from other players.

Take a look at any FFA, and you can fairly reliably predict who will win just by looking at the least "crowded" starting position. If the first three players are all bunched together in Europe while I'm expanding through South America, it will be pretty hard for me not to win that game.

Later in the game, you have to use the geography of the map, the cards available (and other appropriate settings), and diplomacy (if that's on the table) to try to repeatedly generate that situation over and over.

I'm not a good player, but in my experience, whether hiding in the corner works or not is entirely dependent on how crowded the map is. If it isn't very crowded, hiding in the corner always seems to result in defeat, whereas if it is crowded, hiding seems to work better as you limit the number of territories and incomes you have to fight against, and the extra expansion that is lost doesn't seem to be that big of a loss. I generally have issue at judging what is crowded and isn't, as well as predicting what territories are going to get attacked.

Yeah, exactly. In a one-on-one, you should never "hide in the corner". In a 40-player FFA with full territory distribution, you pretty much have to.

Here's what I consider "the corner" - this kind of situation:

One of my favorites is to put all my armies on one territory, penetrate their most valuable bonus, then blockade it. It makes people so angry--and it's effective.

Not necessarily saying that can help you in this specific scenario, just saying that that's a pretty good strategy in FFAs.

No, that's a total waste of armies. Blockading shouldn't be needed if you're already inside their main bonus with a huge stack, chances are they already lost the game at that point, blockading your armies will just prevent you from capitalize your win and transform it in income.
