I now know that a boss is not the same as a commander. If a boss dies, it does NOT cause his team to surrender. Got it. (Is this explained anywhere?) I ALSO now know that bosses can grow in power, and his little picture changes as he does. http://s33.postimg.org/s75iojx0v/Grr.jpgWhat I don't know is, how can I possibly know how strong he is? Is this explained anywhere? On the single player 'Someone stole my oil' level, he grew at the end of Turn 12, then at the beginning of Turn 18, as you see in the image. Killed all 205 of my attacking armies. :-(

Wait, on 'Someone stole my oil' how much power does he start with? It's never shown for me and in a previous attempt, he died attacking a 60ish stack of mine.
Also, I've already reported and chatted with Fizzer about a visibility issue with the boss. Sometimes he disappears and then reappears at the end of the turn or when I go back in the history. I didn't even know that I wasn't seeing something that I should be.
P.S. Thanks for posting the image for me.

Okay, so the boss in WW 2320 DOES show power, but the boss in Someone SMO does NOT. Correct?
I haven't seen these boss clones, yet, do they come at a later level?

I think we really need an explanation of how the boss works. It wouldn't make sense to play in a strategy game without even knowing what rules the opponent has to abide by.

I can vouch that the boss is worth 60 at some point.
At the beginning, he is at least worth 20, but I can't say for sure beyond that. On turn 12, he grows in power. I can deduce that he is worth 60 armies at this point.
On turn 17, he grows in power again (unfortunate for me, because I attacked with 102 armies, thinking I had him, but instead lost all 102). At that point he appears to be worth 300. (But keep in mind that he tends to deploy a few armies, as well. I foolishly attacked with 510, thinking I would kill him, but he deployed enough armies to survive the attack, which really ruined my day.)

I agree, however, that some explanation of how he works is necessary.
For starters, the "old" boss (in World War 2320) can be hurt. This one, it appears, cannot.
If we're not supposed to know, that should be mentioned in the scenario somewhere (a la "Good luck figuring it out! It's a puzzle for you to solve").

I've had the same problem, actually. I throw stacks of 200-300 at him, but his counter never seems to go down. It just stays at 300 no matter what. I've chased him around the entire map a few times now and no change. Has anyone figured this out? Is it a bug or something?

There are four types of bosses. I have tested a little bit in the single player, so I'll copy-paste my comment from another thread here about them. Boss 1 is the first type of boss you see in the campaign; I haven't reached the other levels to know when you meet the other bosses though. For the bosses, from my testing I do have some information on them, I believe. (When I say 'several' in this, I mean somewhere 5-10)
Boss 1: 400 health, as they lose health they also lose strength. Every several turns they will spawn a bunch of armies on their space after other deployments, starting with 11, then 36, then presumedly more.
Boss 2: Starts with 20 health. Every several turns they will increase in strength, going to 60, then 300. These cannot lose health; if they are not killed they will remain at their full strength, making them quite hard to beat once they are at 300. These transformations happen on turn 11 and 14.
Boss 3: Starts with 100 health, when they die they spawn four clones with 90 health. When those die they spawn clones with 80 health. (I forget how many 80 health clones spawn per each; though I think its four.) I have not tested it, however, I believe that they do not lose health similar to Boss 2.
Boss 4: Starts with 400 health, they also lose army-killing power as their health goes down .Every several turns a random territory will turn into armies belonging to the player that owns this.

Not a bug. There are two types of bosses. One has a static strength displayed over his head while the other had a number that changes. If the number never decreases then he is a standard commander that regenerates every turn. If it steadily decreases then he can be whittled down over time.
For a boss with 300 that doesn't reduce you need to attack with at least 500 armies (300/.6) plus however many armies are needed to kill the normal armies with him. Attacking with anything smaller is just a waste of armies since he regenerates
