The most optimal way to avoid losing is to generate more income per average turn then your opponent. However, certain other factors must be taken into account, including positioning of the armies already on the board. If there is more then one opponent, then the key is to make them fight each other, leaving you clear to conquer the world.

More armies + more production is advantage for you.
1/3 to 1/2 more armies produced than opponent is a win condition in long games.
Taking a huge bonus like +5 or +6 helps you win.
Like taking Greece or Turkey in Romanum Imperum in mid game.
Very good idea to play RT ladder.
Many different templates and very strategic.
