EU Referendum: 2016-06-23 23:46:52

There is seriously no thread on this?
Possibly the issue with -potentially- the biggest impact that I may be part of in my entire lifetime!

Less than 5.5 hours to the results apparently.
Let's hear some thoughts!

Who thinks we should remain in the European Union?
Who thinks we should stay?
How do you think the EU would cope without the UK?
What do you see as the pro and contra to each side?
What is the view of people from your own countries, is there bias in the media towards one side or the other?

Not sure what the outcome's going to be (betting markets seem to think it's very likely Remain, but polls are much less certain), but leaving will create a bunch of complications- economic decline, having to keep free movement of labor anyway to be part of the common market, the inter-Irish border suddenly becoming an EU/non-EU border (or remaining an unmonitored border, which undermines the whole border control aspect), Scotland/Wales/Ireland favoring Remain and benefiting heavily from EU membership, etc.

That said, Leave is something I'd be excited to see the results of. It could actually strengthen the European Union when the British economy tanks as a result and possible independence referendums arise.

The EU is too dangerous to freedom as it stands. It's trying to get it's own army, and this army would be for two things: Putting down provinces in the EU that don't want to be in it anymore, and invading Foriegn places.

If Britain leaves, it's quite possible that this whole structure falters with Eurosceptic countries in the east having their own referendums.

Thanks for the reply, knyte. I wrote something in the other thread.
I am hopeful that remain wins, as I think leaving would be a mistake.
It also may have huge repercussions through the rest of europe.

if the EU dissolves then what will stop Europe from devolving back into warring states as it has been since time immemorial?
Kinda a radical point, but an interesting one :P

I agree that we benefit a great deal, but I also think the system needs a total overhaul. It's become bloated and corrupt.

They estimate ~1.9billion euros frittered away -with no benefit to the people of the member countries- per annum.

P.S. The question remains, it is possible?! Can the EU, so set in its ways by now, really change into what it was created to be? tbh I'm sceptical. Politics is never that easy

@Muten: I don't see another unstable Europe emerging from a collapsed EU, since NATO covers just about every military power in the region and their economies are this point too interdependent for war to be viable. Then again, leaving the EU has massive economic repercussions too but people don't seem to care.

Why would Europe go to war against each other when few if any have an incentive to? Maybe Albania-Kosova and Serbia, but the only other conflict triggers I see are already triggered (Azerbaijan-Armenia, Ukraine-Donbas/Lushank).

yeah, that's a far side point tbh. I maybe shouldn't have mentioned it :P

Europe is not as strong as it may appear to many people... economically speaking ofc
The UK boasts of its economic growth, but how much of that can't just be put down to population increase?

Everyone is jumping on issues like immigration with such fervour. It's a dog-fight over here I'll tell ya.

The EU sadly won't fall apart without the UK (not very quickly, anyway; maybe over time it will).

Leave it.

It's a win for everyone, except for Germany and France.

Britain has 0 in common with Europe. We need to stop trying to create a United States of Europe and create a United Commonwealth of English-speaking countries along with Australia, Canada, India and New Zealand.

^ Yep. The United Kingdom of Scotland and Ireland will still be in the EU, so the UK is still in, however Scotland will no longer be part of the United Kingdom of England and Wales, so he's right there.
