Clearly we should blame the guy who's number one defense priority was hunting down and killing Osama bin Laden.

Jk Obama clearly hates America and wants us to fall to R A D I C A L I S L A M I C T E R R O R I S M because if you don't say the magic words R A D I C A L I S L A M I C T E R R O R I S M and blame an entire religious group that's 3 times as large as the United States you're not gonna get anywhere.

Obama's strategy doesn't deviate much from Bush's- don't alienate the group that's most capable of helping you. One of the greatest things about America is that it doesn't force Americans to choose between identities- you can be a Christian and an American, you can be Asian and American, you can be a socialist and an American; America accommodates. There's no good reason for the President of the United States to give in to political theater and tell millions of Americans that one part of their identity is in some sort of civilizational conflict with being an American- especially when it's virtually always been the policy of the United States that you can belong to any religion, race, etc., and still call yourself an American. There's a few times we've deviated from that, of course, like the Japanese internment camps, but I can't think of many Americans who'd bring that up with pride.

Yemen and Pakistan demonstrate that pretty well. We've been bombing the hell out of terrorists there only to turn them into martyrs and breed distrust of the US to the point we'd started alienating our close allies in Europe. People don't trust you nearly as much if you're violent.

@the best: That's exactly the point. Obviously a disproportionate amount of terrorism is being done in the name of Islam today. But you don't resolve that issue by bringing up the Islam/foreigner part as soon as you can (a la Trump).

In 2006, the FBI decided to infiltrate a mosque (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/fbi-plant-banned-by-mosque-ndash-because-he-was-too-extreme-2153057.html) and encourage terrorism to catch any potential terrorists. The mosque instead banned the guy for being an extremist. These people are close to the extremists, capable of catching them, serving as our eyes and ears on the ground. If instead we start pointing to their Islamic identity as the problem, we alienate the best defense system we have.

One of the reasons we've historically been so successful has been our ability to realize we can turn our enemies into extremely useful allies- like Japan and Germany. Let's not make the mistake of letting this conflict become the West vs. Islam.

FYI, terrorists are doing exactly what you are offering - bombing the sh*t out of every issue they come across.

Doesn't help the world peace a lot now does it?

Blowing up an airport will get you nowhere.
Blowing up a city killing all inhabitants as a rebuttal will show some results.

Ireland's another good example of a political conflict manifesting itself as a religious or ethnic one. You've got Protestant Republicans and Catholic Unionists, but even today most people assume it was Catholics vs. Protestants- because people were smart enough to realize it's easy to rile others up if you say the other side's attacking your religion or your race. Pakistani villagers and tribesmen won't join your cause as easily if you say you're really fighting against American foreign policy- but they'll jump on board if you say you're fighting for their families, for their faith, and for their identity. American foreign policy disagreements aren't nearly as threatening as someone telling you the other side's actually hunting your people down because of their faith and their culture.

The best thing you can do at that point is not play into their hands. To not only avoid an escalation of violence but also make sure that their claims don't become reality, you have to include even those the other side claims to be your inherent enemy.

Look at India 1947, for example. Pakistan- about half their Muslim population- split because a group of people decided to turn their political differences into religious/civilizational differences. Pakistan maintains that there's two separate nations in the region- based on religious identity- while India's official policy has always been a repudiation of that false division. If you refuse to play into your enemy's hands and instead remain a welcoming and united society, you can convince a large chunk of the "other side" to stick around with you. In India's case, they managed to keep half their Muslim population even as race and religious riots were going on- and they got the other side's leader's family to ditch him and instead accept the less divisive ideology.

Don't play into ISIS's hands and play off the American Muslim community as an Other that regularly cheers terror attacks. Instead, emphasize our shared American identity and trigger more situations like 2006- where, instead of joining the enemy, Americans remain Americans and help you catch the enemy when they come to them.

This is especially important in the case of ISIS. ISIS is more dangerous than al-Qaeda not because they're superior in terms of equipment or logistics but because their entire plan is to encourage lone wolf attacks. Lone wolves are ridiculously difficult to catch- no links, no obvious planning- and you need a really solid information network (the kind that's bigger than what the FBI and even the NSA can pull off) to warn you before shit happens.

Well Knyte, I don't think you should be so positive on how tolerant the US is. Thousands of Mexicans throughout the Southwest were murdered and robbed by soldiers, they weren't welcomed with open arms, were they? What about the colony in Okinawa, where thousands of women were raped, entire towns uprooted and sent to camps, 90% of the buildings in the island were destroyed, and it was turned into a "a vast field of mud, lead, decay and maggots"? And thousands, probably tens of thousands of German, French, Dutch and Belgian women were raped as well, not to count the rampant looting.

We've definitely faltered in the past. We screwed up with just about every minority group at least once, sometimes a lot more than that. But the thing is, we should learn from those mistakes- not just perpetuate them as they destroy us.
