Hey all, just floating a small idea: I think it would be cool if you could set the wastelands to be generated AFTER everyone makes their picks and their starting spots get assigned. The way I envision it, the wastelands wouldn't get put into any bonus region that a player was assigned, otherwise it would be too hardcore.
I think this would add a nice simple random element to the game if the game creator so desired.

It would certainly change up the game. I like it in a way in that it would make pulling off a come behind victory more possible. But at the same time that kind of rewards a player who possibly/probably didn't play very well and the more skilled player is now losing purely to fortune. It would also make the games longer and more drawn out since you don't want to concede too early in case the tides shift your way.
It's a good idea if you're into that kind of life on the edge game. :P

I don't get the impression that Imagination thinks this suggestion means the same as I do... ¬_¬
I can't see it changing the game in any of the ways he describes there, since it would have no effect beyond the first few turns...?
I guess it would mean you didn't know where all the wastelands were, but you'll find out fairly soon and it's not going to enable a bad player to beat a good one...
It's definitely an interesting idea though :)

Yes my suggestion wasn't that wastelands keep cropping up in the middle of an ongoing game (though that would be interesting as well,) but rather that they wouldn't be generated until after people had already finished turn 0, and thus you would never know whether your planned expansion path was going to run you right into a wasteland..

I think this was suggested before. It's a good idea, adding some luck without the total randomness of autopicks.

Another thing that might be cool would be incrementing wastelands, where they start out small (perhaps the same as the normal neutral territory army size) but then would continuously increase at a rate of TRUNC(1+(Turn#/10))...

Sure I agree, customizability is always better, but I think that what I came up with would be a fair default, basically 1 per turn from turn 1-9, 2 per turn for 10-19, 3 per turn from 20-29, and so on...

Well what if you had more wastelands in bonuses surrounding your picks as opposed to your opponents' starting points is what I was saying. You could have the lead but the not only would you have wasted a few armies before finding the wasteland but you would also be out of gaining armies from your bonus while your opponent has now regained his footing by being able to complete his bonus. Now I suppose it's not as big of a deal if the wasteland wasn't as big as I'm normally accustomed to, 10, if it was 4 or 6 then that wouldn't be too big of an impact.
