The North's industrialism was the modern way to go. The South depended far too much on Northern manufacturing. The South also didn't have the same amount of people as the North.
Not to mention a lot of Southerners were poor, so poor they didn't have slaves.

Also, a fourth of all British food imports were the US, so they couldn't really risk starvation over cotton. And the majority of the population was pro-US too.
