I can't understand it. According to my logic, it's a waste of money since there are so many ways to train your muscles for free.(think running, cycling, training with your own weight, training with heavy objects, you can do whatever your creativity allows you to think of).

More than this, you can actually MAKE money doing workout(any physical job...)

I call it wasting money and it's a sign of stupidity. I can't make friends with people my age(or any age) because I find them do stupid things, therefore i can't relate to them very well.

Is there something wrong with me or everyone else?!?

Paying for entertainment is a waste of money?

I hope you don't pay for movies, or videogames. You better leave that clan you're in too, someone wasted money buying that.

Calling people stupid only because they like things you don't like or don't understand could be called arrogance, and it's the quite likely reason behind you can't make friends.

Meh. It's fun. I have run before and it is not fun at all, while playing competitive soccer is. However, the bread-and-circuses imbeciles who think ESPN is real news should kill themselves.

Think cycling

Bad example. You need to buy a bike first. You could ask for someone to lend you a bike*.

Most sports require having appropriate kit. You need to pay for the kit to be able to participate in the sport. You then enjoy yourself from participating .

*=Not everyone is willing to lend you a bike if they had a spare.

Why are you guys so defensive? I feel like I've hit a topic which you feel unsecure to discuss. Such attitude doesn't encourage me to talk at all, however I will add my few words. Maybe someone else will speak.

My thesis is that the more your life is meaningless, the more you strive for meaningless entertainment, especially something which is commercialized, easy to get, you just go pay and take what you want.

You have no idea how to enjoy yourself without paying for this to someone else!

I waste my portion of time and money too. However the difference between me and you is that i am aware of this and want to change, to spend my time and money in a more meaningful way. Namely:

-spending time with people who are worth it
-helping others
-doing sports without spending any money
-start a family
-finding a job appropriate for you and saving money to gain financial independence

As the last point I would add entertainment, indeed, however only as something which should be of the lowest priority in our lives. I am especially talking here about commercialized, empty entertainment, which makes you feel good in the short term but otherwise it's pointless.

It's a good example. Because you buy a bike and it's good investment for its cost. Also, you actually own it. So, lets say paying for a year of gym membership is just spending money. Buy buying a bike is an investment and that's a big difference.

What if you're broke and can't afford a bike? How would you cycle?

We're not defensive, you're just stupid.

Why are sports any different than any other form of entertainment?

You pay to go to the theater. You pay to buy a book, movie, videogame. You pay to use the internet. etc.

You're basically deciding that because you don't like sports that those that do are somehow inferior to you.

"I waste my portion of time and money too. However the difference between me and you is that i am aware of this and want to change, to spend my time and money in a more meaningful way. Namely:

You're making a ton of baseless assumptions here about people you know nothing about.

1.) If you're part of a sports team, you make friends with the people on the team, they are people worth spending time with.

2.) Providing people with entertainment is helping others.

3.) Whether you're spending money is irrelevant, time is money.

4.) Quite sure these aren't even remotely mutually exclusive. You don't drop all your hobbies and make a vow to remain miserable for the rest of your life when marrying someone.

5.) I'm quite financially independent. I work for a financial firm as a senior software enginner. I make Nearly $150,000 a year. Having fun via whatever means I choose has never stopped me from making money or being independent.

If you're broke, you don't buy a bike(you just walk). If you're in a coma, you don't move out of that bed. However, I am talking about the majority of people who have two hands, two legs and actually can affort a bike.

"KK2nd BFD" said a few valid points. Also, apart from being rude, you have one valid point. If the money you spend on sport/entertainment, is very little in relation to your income, then you are in a different situation and everything costs you less, because you can afford it much easier.

It's all relative. My topic was mostly aimed at people who spend a noticeable part of their time/income on "empty entertainment".

Why do people pay for drugs?
Why do people pay for homes?
Why do people pay for their children to go to school?
Why do people pay to play games?
Why do people pay to go out to eat?

Just comes down to what people value. People value things differently than you. People who value paying sports will go out and pay to get specialized gear to play it. People who value video games will spend money to have a nice computer and buy the latest games. People who pay for their children to go to school value their child's education.

I was on holidays for three weeks in a place where the "cool kids" come, with rich parents. They do surfing, kitesurfing, visit fancy restaurants, party all the time, get drunk, smoke weed, listen to brainless music.

I think I could never be like them. Maybe I have spent so much time around these people, that now I think everyone is like this. This can overwhelm your psyche when you are constantly around people who are the opposite to you.

I hope that I will find people who are more like me and value and prioritize similar things. However, as for now, finding them seems like looking for a drop of water in an ocean : /

Agree with this one. I like sports and recreation, but the other stuff - ughhh.

Hello fellow intelligent WarLighter (berdan)! I too do not see why the peasants waste time and money on meaningless hobbies and sources of enjoyment like sports. Also, I share the same problem of having difficulties making friends. The inferiors do not share my views or hobbies.

Shall we rejoice together as the both of us possess higher intellect than the common human?

According to my logic, it's a waste of money since there are so many ways to train your muscles for free.(think running, cycling, training with your own weight, training with heavy objects, you can do whatever your creativity allows you to think of).

Sports isn`t only for training your muscles. It can also be a way to meet new people, get together with people you like and a good way to clear your mind for a while. Sports have a different meaning to anyone. You seem to think that sports is only good for training your muscles, in which case a lot of things will seem as a waste of money. For most people however it is a form of entertainment (as said before in this thread).

The reason people are willing to pay for sports is because for a lot of sports you need a good place to play it. If you want to play tennis for example it is quite usefull to have a tennis court. It is also quite usefull to maintain this court so it stays a playable field. Making a tennis court and maintaining it yourself is much more expensive than joining a tennisclub. Because a tennisclub shares those costs between all members. Besides that, sportclubs often offer extras, like diners or fieldtrips. These often come at a lower cost and they are a great way to be around your friends.
Even when it comes to just training your muscles. You`ll need certain machines to do certain exercises. You can`t train all your muscles just with the everyday object you have at your home. So you`ll need to buy some stuff and you need to have enough space to place all of those machines. This is quite expensive, if it is even possible. So once again it is better to share the costs with others and go to a fitnisscentre or something. There you`ll also be assured that you don`t need to maintain the machines nor need to buy new ones when old ones break.
