Hey, instead of passively trying to disourage his trolling, you could try using the voting mechanism to dv any low-signal, high-noise trollish comments. I've been doing it consistently whenever I read one. It takes so little time to do, and if more people were to do it, those comments would get hidden and the forums would be much better off.
Besides, it starves the troll of attention. Instead of adding a comment to the derail, just dv.
If enough people consistently do this (in a principled manner, not voting wars), trolling will lose all incentive, and people will put more thought into their comments. Then, in the future, downvoting will become much less necessary.
