no, you dont want people to have to pay to play - most wont. i know i wont. i can understand that it takes alot of $$ to get the game up and running, but i think you should get sponsors - put adds on the sidebars or something along those lines. just dont charge to play, maybe just for extra.
if you make people pay, or even have to shell out $30, you will loose the enormous wave of people that are coming over from kongregate.com.

I was referring to membership payment options. Not forcing everyone to pay. Simply expanding/changing the ways to become a member to include a cheaper than now current $30 option for a non-lifetime membership.

good ideas by doushi (monthly membership) and dizzle (ads). though both would be substantial increases in customer service requirements.
to do what pogo.com does would be an incentive for increased membership (and non-member displeasure): advertising respites for non-members; no ads for members.

i still prolly wont pay (i am assuming that if i wont, many more people wont) but the $2-$5 for a monthly makes alot more sense. i would be totally fine with the adds - just please dont have pop-ups :D
and i have never heard of pogo.com. what did they do for incentive?
**i looked them up and i can see that they are a game site.

The idea of weekly and monthly membership was discussed long time ago, just after launching WarLight 1.1. And as far as I remember, sooner or later Randy was about to implement more flexible payment system (for week, month year etc.) and put away lifetime membership as it exists right now. That would definitely get more players to 'give it a try' membership purchase.
By the way, if it's not a problem for you, spend 5 minutes to register on kongregate.com (in case you are not there yet) and vote for WarLight. That will help WarLight to become highest rated uploaded in October game and thus let Randy win 1500 $, which I'm sure will be spent on WL development and advertisement system. Let's make our little 'thank you' in this humble way :)

I am one of the many who have now discovered this game (and more specifically this site) due to the game now existing on Kongregate. For a free game it seems like good fun, certainly among the better games Kongregate and other flash game sites offer. Given its inspirations and niche, it could certainly be a stand alone purchasable game in its own right, which is what I found here with the cost to unlock additional features.
$30 does seem a bit high, though considering all the game has going for it, it is not all too unreasonable a sum. The closest thing I can think of that is similar in nature (Re: Risk clone with a bunch of maps) is Lux Delux which goes for $15. I've no idea how strong the Lux community is though, and community would be the key factor for any game with multiplayer.
The mechanic of turns happening at the same time is simply wonderful. and order priority adds extra layers of strategy that games like Risk just can't offer. Complex yet simple...a hallmark of the most beloved games.

WarLight allows for multi-day games, meaning you can have on-going games that you play once per day. Lux games all happen real-time, which means that WarLight needs to keep a database around that stores your games forever, which is very expensive. For this reason, WarLight will always be more expensive than Lux, but the added benefit is you can have things like ladders, tournaments, and on-going games.

even though i am not a member and will not be one, i believe that the idea of having add for non-members should go forward, u need the money, and some limited pub wont kill me
