I thought the AI was improved a few updates ago... why does it still expand as much as possible over defending anything then?

It does far worse things. If you have one spot in a safe bonus with 1 army and it has the rest it will NEVER take it to complete the bonus

The AI is not able (as in worse then hel*) to play on maps with superbounuses. On maps without a human could easely outsmart it, but at least it is then able to try.
