Books on modern politics is pretty much hard, like any political book, they're a lot of the time written by the politicians themselves, so not very neutral or quality information. Still you could try going for those, all the candidates have one book where they say everyone is wrong and the country is doomed, and explain why only they can solve the problem.
Also depends on if you speak french or not, because if you do we have plenty of good quality papers that are definetly good to understand the french politic system:
- Liberation: left leanning
- Le Figaro: right leanning
- Le Monde: centre-left leanning (definetly the best quality one)
All these papers have some stances, but they are still very objective and produce high quality content. I follow all three of them and it keeps me well informed. And frankly, I'd say they're ammoung the best papers in the world.
There's also a France 2 (TV) news at 8pm every day and they talk a lot about France's politics with also a very good content. I like the fact that they talk to all major candidates/politicians and make very though questions to them. Definetly worth watching.
