The whole idea of who the best player ever is, is really hard to answer. Because we haven't defined what we mean by "best player ever." Do we mean who has had the highest ELO on the ladder? This could be a good way to measure it, but ELO rating systems have plenty of their own issues so it is not a perfect system (disclaimer: I am not familiar with the exact way Warlight figures its ELO rankings.) Maybe we mean the person who had the longest run as number 1? Or maybe the player that had the highest average ELO over the course of their career? Maybe the player who won the most games could work too? The point is asking who is "the best player ever," without stating your criteria for what makes someone the "best player ever," just leads to speculation and ambiguous answers, because there just isn't a good way to answer that question without more information.

I'll second Dead Piggy. He quit before the ladder switched to SR, but I have no doubt that he'd have dominated the hell out of the new ladder just as much if not more than he did WR.

I would have to go with Dead Piggy as well. He was not the most dominant player, and he didn't have the best overall run. He did take #1 at many different time periods, and was consistently a top 5 player every time he joined the ladder. His ladder performance is definitely up there with the best, but I think a few others could claim to be his equal based solely off ladder stats.
What the ladder doesn't show you is how Dead Piggy was always experimenting, trying to learn ever little detail he could about warlight, and specifically, Strategic 1v1. I feel confident saying that Dead Piggy understood the intricacies of Strategic 1v1 better than any player ever. He could beat you in so many different ways; he didn't win while using only one or two styles as many #1's have. Dead Piggy contributed new ideas and strategies to Strategic 1v1, and perfected some that had been previously used but not perfected.
I don't think Dead Piggy would have been a huge fan of the ladder changing to Straight Round, but as Nauzhror said, Dead Piggy would have been able to dominate the new ladder every bit as much as he did the old Strategic 1v1. I wonder if he may have been even stronger; Dead Piggy was an excellent Straight Round player.
I should also give honorable mentions to Szeweningen, dunga, Zaeban, Gui, and Gnuffone, all of whom I believe brought forth new ideas and strategies into Strategic 1v1.
