Hi all, and welcome to Season 9 of the Small Earth P/R League! From this season I will be running the league after Huddyj have retired (shout out to Huddyj for doing a great job), but I hope that the transition will go smothly. Start Cut-Off Date: The tournaments will be started the first weekend of February. . Post in the thread or send me a mail if you wish to join the next season. This season is made up of seven groups of up to 10 players (A through to G) and 1-2 expansion groups (H1 & H2), depending on the number of new players. Each is set at 5 games at once with a 3-day boot time. Rule changes since last season: 1. Boots no longer count as negative points, except for use in tie breaker, however now players with 3 boots in a season will be kicked from the league. Small Earth 1v1 League Concept and Rules
Concept
The Small Earth Promotion/Relegation League is a seasonal group of round-robin tournaments, always on the “Small Earth” map with standard coin settings. At the end of each season, the top players of each group are promoted to the next group above. Bottom players are relegated to the next group below. Middle players remain in the same group.
The league is meant to appeal to players who want to see, over the course of several seasons, where their natural level of competition might take them. For new, skilled participants, this means patience in getting to the levels where they will be challenged. Hopefully, that is part of the fun. The idea is to see how quickly you can progress, how long you can stay high, or how long it takes to stop a skid.
Rules
The league is run with a balance of predictability and flexibility. Final decisions are made by the league administrator with an attempt to consider input of league players.
The model will typically be to have the top three promote and the bottom three relegate but there are exceptions. Where there is a default – a player becoming inactive or asking to bow out of the league – there can be more promotions to fill in the vacancy. Where this happens in several groups there can be a lot of shuffling. The principle, though, is to usually have at least one player from each group relegated. Several retirements mean fewer relegations and more super-promotions to keep the groups filled.
Rule CHANGE!: There will no longer be a 0.5 point deduction for booting, as this make it a lot more time consuming to make league standings, although boots will be in tiebreakers (see below). Instead of getting kicked for having a negative score, the rule will now be that players are kicked if they have 3 or more boots in a season, or 2 boots in two consecutive seasons, unless there is a really good reason for the boots. Kicked players can only return as a new player in the bottom group. Vacations are honoured, however, any player taking more than 3 vacations in a single season will be kicked from the league and can only return in future season as a new player in the bottom group.
Placements in a round-robin are determined by number of wins. In the event of a tie, placements are determined by head-to-head results among the tied. Occasionally, there are loops of ties that cannot be resolved by the head-to-head rule. If this is the case, ties will be broken by the following (in order of preference):
1 (NEW): No. of Boots. Boots is penalized in resolving ties not solved by the head to head rule. Booted players are move to the buttom of the tie, and head-to-head is applied again between players with the same amount of boots. 2: Overall win/loss ratio. (The total wins of each player you defeated versus the total wins of each player you lost against) 3: Tie-break tournament. (Unless such a tournament would cause lengthy delays for the league) 4: Average turn-speed (only if a tie-break tournament fails to resolve the tie, or would take too long to complete)(where a tie-break tournament has resulted in another tie, average turn speed within the tie-break tournament will be used to split the tie)
Anyone can join the league, members and non-members alike, simply by request in the most recent “Small Earth Promotion/Relegation League” forum thread. New players begin in the bottom group or in an expansion group. Promotions from expansion groups depend on numbers within the new groups.
Before the beginning of each season, a summary of the movements will be announced to allow for questions or corrections. The league works most smoothly if those who wish to bow out let the administrator know before the new season begins instead of simply declining to play after the groups have been determined and tournaments begun.

Best debut:
Arkanton and Hades 1st (s6/s8)
Master Bjarke and iNsAnE 2nd (s3/s6)
mslasm and Sultan Kosmitow 3rd (s2/ s3)
Hades made a great debut with a 7-1 record and claimed the title.
This is exactly what Arkanton did in season 6, so now the two of them share the honour of
best debut in A.
Most winning clans:
Creative Cloud 4
Lynx 2
[BR] FUDEW 1
Icelandic Turtles 1
I have started also noting the clan of the winner. Creative Cloud have a solid league with
the 4 wins thanks to Huddyj being from this clan. Lynx is the only clan with more than one
player getting the title, due to Arkanton and Hades winning season 6 and 8 respectively.

RULE IDEA: Juan got me thinking with his comment on the season 8 thread: maybe it would make sense in the future, to have first place from each H group play each other in a single game, to provide a way for me to rank them against each other, if they have the same record from the league? In this season, if I wanted to give triple promotions, I would have to give two of them. There would be no guarentee that this match would matter in any way, just the possibility of it. Would that make sense doing next season (providing that there are two H groups at all)?? The game would be created only if there would be a decent amount of time before the next season are created.

Instead of choosing (when there are 2 equally ranked players from different groups at the same level of league) it would be better if solution is found withing known frames (before league starts) or they are both equal in promotions/relegations (if there would be new paralel levels within league like "H" leagues are).

Master Bjarke, to comment on your question: To my opinion normal promotions and relegations should be the rule. Double- or even triple-promotions should only be exceptions due to filling up the league.
But I want to present a different suggestion as well: why should there be double or triple promotions at all? Lets assume there is someone dropping out of group A. Instead of double promotion from C an option might be that the first 4 (not 3) of group B promote, leaving only 2 (instead of 3) relegating. What do you guys think about it?

I agree with Suschel. People willing to play could stay in own league rather than being relegated (but at least one from the league should be relegated/booted/dropped). Super-promotions should be used only if there are dropping from the upper level leagues that are impossible to fill from the league(s) of next level.

My understanding of the rules as they were written was that all super-promotions come from people dropping out, and more places having to be filled, otherwise everything consists of single promotions/relegations. But that was my reading. So yeah it seems pretty ambiguous what happens when there are no drop outs, and a guideline (I don't think writing out every case is necessary, just a sense of what to expect) of what do if there are.

in season 7 there were triple promotion... That's why i thought that there was gonna be in last season too... i dont care if there are double or triple promotions, i only care that rules should be clear from the begining... I think the rules are fairly clear as they are. In the rules which is in the second post on all season thread describes it as follows: The model will typically be to have the top three promote and the bottom three relegate but there are exceptions. This means that if there is no drop outs or players being kicked for booting too much (and noone not joining their tournament in time), there will be 3 promotions and 3 relegations in every group. This is never going to happen though. If the seems unclear from the above, I can try to refrase it - would that help? It is not meant to be ambiguous in the case of no drop out. However as there will be drop outs, things gets complicated. If say the rule was to just promote one more from the group below, and lets say that there is one drop out in each group (I expect there to be more really), then A would be, 3 relegations; B=4 promotions 3 relegations; C=5 promotions 3 relegations; D=6promotions 3 relegations (leaving no player from D in D); E would break down as there would be 7 promotions, 3 relegations and one drop out, which is not possible - not to mention G with 9 promotions and 3 relegations. Thus for this reason limiting the number of people who relegates, when there is drop out, is a key feature in stabilizing the groups in my opinion. However it is not fun to loss all the time because a player is stuck in too high of a group, and for that reason I aim to keep 1 player relegating from all groups. Also super promotions is a way to have the tickle down effect of dropouts pass by a certain group and can (and will) be used to avoid players finishing near the buttom of a group from promoting. Espicially triple promotions would however allow players to completly bypass other players rather than having them meet each other in a game to prove themselves, which I think is a shame and not the intent in a P/R league. However it also makes it possible for good new players to faster go to a group where they are challenged. I believe that superpromotions are doing this pretty decent though. The promotions/relegations guide will be posted at some point during the season when I have a better idea of the players that will be there for the next season, and will provide an idea as to how promotions and relegations are going to be, although it will almost certainly be incomplete, as were will likely be drop out or kicks I dont know about when making it. It is an attempt to make transparency about how P/Rs are expected to be, allow for debate on the judgement calls that will be nessesary, and catch mistakes or misunderstandings. Actually making the guide and determining the promotions and relegations is quite a puzzle, and in the proces I do look at how the groups is panning out so far. To clearify on promotions and relegations: - Baseline: 3 promotions and 3 relegations from each group. - Dropouts will lead to deviations from the baseline: Less will relegate and more will promote. - The actual standings in the groups will affect how this is done. E.g. winning a group with a perfect score will increase the odds for getting a superpromotion, but it will NOT guarantee it. Did this help clearify on how promotions and relegations are stated?
