I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a ladder tournament - I was thinking the top 64 players would participate and it would run like March Madness for the NCAA, with 4 brackets of 16 people and matches according to rank. It would just be 1v1, ladder rules, but as with March Madness it's always fun to see if someone can make an upset or have a Cinderella run.
Of course, if someone in the top 64 did not want to participate, the 65th player would be invited and so on until we fill 64.
If you guys want an incentive, I could throw in $20 or something for the winner.
And hell, we could even make a betting pool.... xP
Anyways, anyone think this is a good idea?

theres only about 100 people in the 1v1 ladder so im not sure you have enough. also, quite a lot of the best players arent currently ranked.

So are there a lot of inactive members that are still highly ranked? I got the sense that members were pretty active on this site, much more so than non-members.
And in response to the issue with good members not participating, I guess that would be their loss for not joining the ladder. Perhaps we could find a way of integrating them, but I can't think of one right now. If you had suggestions, I would be glad to hear them

Well, this idea is being thoroughly shot down without any consideration.
I wanted to do was make a tournament for the top ladder members because **that's the only quantifiable way to rank people without having a ranking tournament**. If someone gave an idea about what to do with active members who do not do the ladder, that would be helpful. That's why I made this thread! Not be told how poor my idea is, but to get some *constructive* feedback to make this thing better/happen.

theyre generally more active, but im about 30th right now, and id definitely drop out of the toop 64 if all members were in the ladder.

And yes, I recognize the question posed in the first post says "good idea."
But really, I was looking for a no answer that explained why (which I am getting) and provided an idea or thought as to how to do this (which I am not). So can we refocus to that please?

So what do you suggest I do to find those non-ladder active member's rank/ability? Perhaps win percentage in 1v1?

im not saying you cant do it or you cant do it the way you said, im just saying that the top 64 1v1ers arent the top 64 players or even members.

how many people are in the [20] thing? add various top players, heyheuhei etc, to those, youve got about 64.

I'd have no interest.
Not that I am anywhere near top 64 or even top 256 on this site... just throwing my two cents in as I would be in the top 64 active ladder players as of this moment.

One solution could be to invite all active members of the ladder to the tournament. There are 212 players currently in the ladder. Getting around a third to join seems reasonable and you get your 64 players. You would certainly miss out on some of the better players but you would still get many good games i would think.
I think everyone is at least somewhat supportive of the whole 'get the best players together and have them compete idea' but there is just a lot of logistical questions on getting it done and determining who goes.

Dude. You don't have to ask permission. Just start a tourney. Invite the top 64 in the ladder and then fill accordingly. Just do it. If you have an idea, just go for it. You don't need other people to tell you they like it. Let their actions speak their approval.
Just go for it.

I think it's possible to generate full ladder ranking, including "not ranked" players, see http://wiki.warlight.net/index.php/Ladder_Ranks_and_Ratings#Run_your_own_Ladder_Simulations
