i have been told by several experienced players that if im really bad (which i am), i should not even try playing ladder until i git gud. will it permanently damage my account in any way, and if i'll git gud, will i be able to repair my score?
I'm assuming you're talking about the 1v1 Ladder here.
So, you can join the ladder, regardless of whether your good or not. Also, ladder games expire after 5 months anyway, so if you do lose, but end up learning lots and have a great win-streak, then your rating and rank will improve - no permanent damage will be done.
To be fair, the experts do make a decent point - you should practice the 1v1 Ladder template first before joining.
Joining any ladder will improve your game play. If you win you get more rating and if you lose, you get to know what mistakes you make. Also, if you can manage to get feedback from your opponents-it is even better to learn newer things.
Don't worry about losing-as the games expires(except real time ladder) after fixed time.
but as long as you are actively analyzing every lost that comes around, trust me it'll be all worth it
the sooner you get exposure, the better you'll be in for the long run because the ladder will provide you with the practice needed to steamline improvement
if you want to improve first, good luck any any finding good opponents elsewhere because most of the auto-game lobby players you see have no idea what they're doing -> training with bad players will turn you into one
gitting gud beforehand and joining only afterwards can give you a better starting run to the top but you'll just end up overrating yourself and then falling back down afterwards
oh and the damage only lasts for 5 months... if you have the patience you can game the system but I'm not going to get into my rigging secrets lol
