Usually that's by very efficient territories, or the corners since people like having little choke-points.

Actually that whole china india indo area I find to be a place that tends to be important to contest. But that may just be me.
Keep in mind though, the positions of wastelands and the positions of your starting options in random warlords means the hottest places will be different every time. (assuming by hottest you mean contested.)

On the various World maps, Iran is a pretty hot place. It's just so strategic to hold it block it, and nothing else nearby can compare to it.
Nigeria is also quite important as a blocking spot.
