I was getting excited about certain mods that I would like to incorporate into my games but I just found out that only Members can use mods and only Members can play games with mods.

Is this really true? It doesn't make any sense. Why are non-Members barred from playing games with mods? What if I want to play game with mods with a friend who is not a Member?

Please clarify. Thank you.

Mods are a feature being built for the new Unity client. This client is being developed to eventually replace the iOS, Android, and Flash versions of the game.

This client is not done, and is currently released only as a experimental preview for testing.

It's member-only for a few reasons. For one thing, the app doesn't have ads yet, and non-members are supporting their cost by looking at ads. Second, it's a way to reward people who support the site. Third, the app isn't really ready yet for mass distribution, so we want to limit the number of people using it to a reasonable number until it's more complete.

Okay, let's say I become a Member. I mostly play real-time games with players who are not Members. What's the use of getting a mod if I can't play with non-Members. What if I don't want to play only with Members. Perhaps if we non-Members started to play mod games we would have an incentive to get a Membership.

Right now the mod framework is considered "for testing only". There's no games browser or open games system yet, so you'd have to manually find partners via the forum or elsewhere.

Once it's officially launched, you'll be able to create open games and expect them to fill just as games work now.
