It depends. With enough emergent phenomena, a game without a story can be great, for example, a political simulator where you play as a country

idk have you played the original Doom vs. the new one? It was much nicer when you were just going around killing demons. Now they added a whole backstory to it and it only makes the game less satisfying.

Yes, thank you. Doom 4 is getting so much praise for being a gorier Doom 3. And (mandatory) mouse aiming is one of the greatest mistakes in PC gaming.

Imagine the 1 million skeletons map but on Doom 4.

And who ever really got invested in the story for games like Halo, CoD, and Mass Effect? Multiplayer mode was always more fun for FPS-style games, because it's more about what you're able to do with the game than what the game wants you to do.

It depends on what you're looking for.

RPG games very rarely if ever will make sense or be good without some backstory, and some action games probably too.

Beat 'em up and FPS don't need a storyline nearly as much to be fun.
