14,000 landsknecht were part of larger army of Charles V (Holy Roman Emperor) who sacked Rome in 1527. The sack of Rome was a cluster f**k of epic proportions precipitated in part by the inability of the Empire to make good on its promise to pay the army, including the landsknecht.

The defense of Pope Clement by the Swiss Guard during the sack is commemorated to this very day.
