This is false. You are getting some bad information or twisting facts or not understanding what you're reading or all of the above.

His approval rating today is significantly worse than when he was elected and worse than it's ever been.

He was around 50% when he was elected.

Let's quickly go over the facts, because the statements in the topic here are quite inaccurate (i.e. they are completely wrong).

Both Wally TAM and Cruelest are not correct: check that link of The Cruelest again and do it properly now. Trumps approval rating was about the same when he was elected, it has been in the 30s during pretty much the whole campaign.

Only AFTER the election and until just after the inauguration, it jumped to above 40% for a while (this is a typical newly elected presidential effect). It was likely never 50% with only very few polls, likely outliers, showing this result while others remained in the low 40s meaning the true favorability was likely in the mid 40s at its top.

At this moment, the approval rating is somewhere between 30% and 50% with consensus pointing towards the high 30s. One individul poll may show 36%, but polls typically have a margin of error of several points.

The statement worst ever is completely wrong. Most presidents actually had worst approval at one point and almost all approached it! An overview:
Obama end of 2014: ~40%
George W Bush end of second term: ~25%
Clinton halfway first year: ~35% (around this same point!)
George HW Bush last year: ~30%
Reagan beginning of 1983: ~35%
Carter much of 1979: ~30%
Ford most of his first year: 35-40%
Nixon's last year: 25-30%
Johnson 1968: 35-40%
Truman's last 2 years: 25-30%

Even at this point in the presidency, Clinton scored about as bad as Trump and he got a second term.

Additionally, even if Trump was more popular at the elections, that is no guarantee of a landslide at all. There is a correlation between approval and vote margins, but partisanship and other factors play an important role as well. With how divisive Trump is and the high amount of people who rather disapprove but still voted for him already, it likely wouldn't have made much of a difference.

What Sportsannouncer31024 says, is also a general consensus, but one based on polls. Other candidates would have needed to go through the election process and would have been more damaged because of it, while they could remain more "clean" now. Kasish might not have hurt Clinton as much as Trump did while Cruz might have pushed moderates her way, leading to a Clinton win for example. Other democrats may have wilted under Trump's pressure during debates and be punished for that at the election. So you cannot put your version as conditional facts. It is correct (based on some data) that it was to be expected, or that we can assume, or that there's high probability of what you describe, but it's not conditionally certain.
Also, in polls Sanders typically had the best margins vs. Trump, so why would you exclude him? Prejudice, taking other factors into account? Guessing?
