With season 11 being finished now, I am starting the work of setting up season 12. I am planning on starting the tournaments sometime in the first weekend of September.

The Small Earth Promotion/Relegation League is a seasonal group of round-robin tournaments, always on the “Small Earth” map with standard coin settings. At the end of each season, the top players of each group are promoted to the next group above. Bottom players are relegated to the next group below. Middle players remain in the same group.


This season is made up of six or seven groups with 10 players for the most part (A through F). If there are enough new players, I will make 2 F groups. If not, when group F will possible be a bit bigger than 10 players. Each tournament is set at 5 games at once with a 3-day boot time.

No rules are changed from last season.

SMALL EARTH 1v1 LEAGUE CONCEPT AND RULES

Concept

The Small Earth Promotion/Relegation League is a seasonal group of round-robin tournaments, always on the “Small Earth” map with standard coin settings. At the end of each season, the top players of each group are promoted to the next group above. Bottom players are relegated to the next group below. Middle players remain in the same group.

The league is meant to appeal to players who want to see, over the course of several seasons, where their natural level of competition might take them. For new, skilled participants, this means patience in getting to the levels where they will be challenged. Hopefully, that is part of the fun. The idea is to see how quickly you can progress, how long you can stay high, or how long it takes to stop a skid.

Rules

The league is run with a balance of predictability and flexibility. Final decisions are made by the league administrator with an attempt to consider input of league players.

The model will ideally be to have the top three promote and the bottom three relegate but there are exceptions. Where there is a default – a player becoming inactive or asking to bow out of the league – there can be more promotions and less relegations to fill in the vacancy. Where this happens in several groups there can be a lot of shuffling. The principle, though, is to usually have at least one player from each group relegated. Several retirements means fewer relegations and possible super-promotions to keep the groups filled.

Players are kicked from the league if they have 3 or more boots in a season, or 2 boots in two consecutive seasons, unless they provide a really good reason for the boots. Kicked players can only return as a new player in the bottom group.
Vacations are honoured, however, any player taking more than 3 vacations in a single season will be kicked from the league and can only return in future season as a new player in the bottom group.

Placements in a round-robin are determined by number of wins. In the event of a tie, placements are determined by head-to-head results among the tied. Occasionally, there are loops of ties that cannot be resolved by the head-to-head rule. If this is the case, ties will be broken by the following (in order of preference):

1: No. of Boots. Boots is penalized in resolving ties not solved by the head to head rule. Booted players are moved to the buttom of the tie, and head-to-head is applied again between players with the same amount of boots.
2: Overall win/loss ratio. (The total wins of each player you defeated versus the total wins of each player you lost against). It comes down to the number of wins by the players that a player have won against. Note Head-to-Head reapplied after, if this solves the tier for some but not all.
3: Tie-break tournament. (Unless such a tournament would cause lengthy delays for the league)
4: Average turn-speed (Last resort. only if a tie-break tournament fails to resolve the tie, or would take too long to complete)(where a tie-break tournament has resulted in another tie, average turn speed within the tie-break tournament will be used to split the tie)

Anyone can join the league, members and non-members alike, simply by request in the most recent “Small Earth Promotion/Relegation League” forum thread. New players begin in the bottom group or in an expansion group. Promotions from expansion groups depend on numbers within the new groups.

Before the beginning of each season, a summary of the movements will be announced to allow for questions or corrections. The league works most smoothly if those who wish to bow out let the administrator know before the new season begins instead of simply declining to play after the groups have been determined and tournaments begun.

AI claims first in his first ever season in A. This seem to be quite a pattern. 
If disregarding the early seasons where huddyj kept winning, 4 out of 6 winners 
was on their first season in A. Buns157 and huddyj is actually the only players 
to ever claim the title, that did not win in their first season in group A. 
Green Turtle claimed runner up, doing so in his first season in A as well.

With TWOLKER relegating in season 10, season 11 was the season that I took 
the lead in most seasons in group A. I have been there since season 3, ending 
no lower than 6th, so I hope to stay around in A. 
I am thinking that I could calculate an "average rank in A" statistic for 
players who have played several seasons there. Let me know if you think that 
would be interesting.

I will look into making that statistic in the history of the league. I think I will do it anyone with at least 3 seasons in A.

I have made the groups now, except for group F where I will wait a few days to see how many players there will be. Currently there at 13 players here.

Group F is up now as well, with only one big group. 13 players atm, and more allowed in. I am thinking I will limit it to 16 spots total, so 3 open spots left for any more new players. Usually there are a few not joining so the actual group may end up closer to the 10 players.

Tournaments will be started on the 2nd of September, so please join before that (and just as soon as possible - no point in waiting)

Group B and F are yet to start. Group B is waiting for Love to come back from vacation (He changed his name, so he got the invite late, as I invited Dr.Love instead). I figured I would wait with Group F untill the same time, as F is not that big and usually finishes quite fast. I will start both tomorrow in about 24 hours.

Group A seem to have started on a higher pace than usual, with many games being completed allready. AI are looking really good for a consecutive league title having lost only 1 game so far (against gogo2711) and won 5. AI can secure the title with a win in his last game.
Juan is looking good as well with a 4-1 record, but that 1 loss was against AI, giving AI the tiebreaker advantage. Juan needs to win his last 2 games and AI to lose the last game against iNsAnE.
Meanwhile iNsAnE is the final player who can still possible win the title, although he has still to finish a single game, so it is hard to know how his season will shape up. At least he is sticking up for the tradition of group A to move along slowly.

With two players not joining group A for this season and Juan dropping out after the season, there will be 1 relegation spot, so in the other end of the table it is all about not finishing last. Newly promoted graemes looks like an early contender for relegation having lost his 4 first games. He needs to get some points on the scoreboard in his last 3 games. Hunta, gogo and myself are 2 for 5, but gaemes is playing me and gogo currently and might need to win both to secure another season in A. iNsAnE of course is a contender for relegation as well as the title, as he is 0/0, so teoretically gaemes could survive if he wins against iNsAnE only and iNsAnE wins no more than 1 game this season.

I have now spend a bit of time making an average rank finished in group A statistic, as I proposed in the history of the league post (I will put it there in the future), since AI proved that somebody read the entire post and though it was a good idea :D
Btw I automated it in my spreadsheet so it should not be much trouble creating forthcomming (provided I did not fuck up with the count.if)
Only players having finish 3 or more seasons in A are included. In case of the same score, I have the player with most seasons played on top. If played the same it is just random.

The lower the score, the better is the average rating. To little surprise to me huddyj comes out as top dog here having won 4 times and never finished lower than 3rd. Hades however is not far behind with 2 wins and a 4th place in his 3 seasons in A. Pana and Arkanton comes follows not too far behind, after which there is quite a gab down to Buns157
