Without the cross, it'll be neutral, which will attract more people to play chess. Not everyone will feel welcome by seeing a cross on it. The most liberal way is to remove the cross from it.

A king is royal, isn't it logical for it to have a royal cross on top? I don't see how that isnt neutral? It's not an uncommon way to show royalty in Europe.

It's not like the cross is a needed part of chess, it doesn't influence the game at all. I've played versions of chess where the kings had crosses, crowns, were nintento action figures (Bowser and Mario), ...

^Oh true that, the french wikipedia page wasn't very clear on the origin, probably because of the constant rule-changing making it hard to determine when it really became chess. Perhaps we have to distinguish modern chess from original chess? Hard to say.
