As pointed our earlier, why does it matter if he has 40 guns if he only used one of them for the shooting? The total number of guns might help the media craft their anti-gun narrative but no much else. Doesn't change the body count.

@Wulf,
The number of guns is relevant when you're firing fully automatic... to a point.
At that sustained rate of fire, weapons jam and overheat. Rather than waiting to cool-down or mechanically un-jam, switch to the next one standing by.
But, because he has that sheer number of guns, that is all that people are talking about. "Why does he need that many." "Someone should have asked why he's buying so many."
This line of questioning leads to a national database of guns... mandatory background checks of all sales so that the government can track the sales/ensure the background checks were done, etc.
I'd like to think that anyone amassing an armory in a short period would get a little bit extra scrutiny (NSA wiretap to ensure they aren't radicalized, etc.) but I also don't trust the government with that information. As a personal note, every piece of my personal information that I supplied to get a TS security clearance was compromised in the OPM hack. Think how inept the government would have to be to allow people with access to TS material to be targeted by foreign agents by keeping personal information unencrypted and in a hackable system. Just imagine what they would do with a federal firearms registry.

He could simply use multiple barrels. Buying 40 separare firearms makes no sense financially.
Worth noting that most gun murders are not mass shootings, especially high profile cases like this. He may have acquired the guns legally, but most guns used in crime are not purchased by the perp. He may have been firing from the 32nd floor but most shootings take place much closer where people have the chance to return fire. Most guns used in crimes are pistols.
Essentially, the media narrative that people with guns are unstoppable, that rifles are killing hundreds of people who would have otherwise lived, is completely false and relies on high profile cases like these.
Ammonium nitrate is also hard to defend against. Case in point.
