Backgrounds:

Republican Grunt: When you enlisted, you hoped you'd get a cozy garrison post in New York, Boston, or the capital, Philadelphia. You were wrong. You fought in the Battle of Newcastle against the Counties and in the Battle of Bowie against the fascists. When your time was up your experience with a gun guided you to a pioneer lifestyle in the zones of the Ohio frontier.

Silver Legionnaire: Born in a small town in the heartland of Dixie, your life was rough but idyllic compared to someone from Kentucky or West Virginia. You volunteered for the army at 16 and qualified as a soldier in the elite Silvertroopers Core of the Federative Army. You skirmished and battled the Reds all along the Ohio and Missouri. When you left the White Man's army you felt leaving the Ohio was wrong so you started living as a pioneer in the zones.

Socialist: You were born in an industrial county in Michigan, and started working at your local factory at 14. At 18 you were conscripted for a Voluntary Mobilization Militia Battalion and sent to the Ohio to drive the fascists out and into Dixie. Things didn't work out that way. After years in trenches across that damned river your term ended and rather than wait to get volunteered again you hopped the river and got to a zone.

German Colonist: You were born and raised to proud pagan party members in the SS administrated German colony of Delmarva. You were raised as a good Aryan by your parents, taught a good curriculum by state schools and learned how to handle a rifle at your youth group. When you reached the age of 18, you decided you wanted adventure, so you set out for a zone on the Ohio.

I will select the option most favored

I choose Socialist. Being alone on the other side of the river (as I interpreted) sounds fun.

By the way, what River you mean?

Edit: Alreay figured out. Ohio River.

I intend to give out the history organically through the story but after picking a background you'll get a bit of an info dump, and yes it's a divided US

No one skilled in unarmed and close quarter combat? FFS

I would pick Scout. Situational awareness (perception) is the most important skill in combat. Everyone can learn to shoot.

Spy, dying on the battlefield may sound heroic but without information about enemy your whole army will die ''heroicly''.

4, Marksman

(You are male and 22, dark brown hair, brown eyes, military cut, clean shaven)

You wake up on a sandy beach. You remember escaping your trench and hoping over the river, and getting caught in the current, then getting knocked out by a rock.

You get up and stretch, popping several joints. You notice on the beach a few yards away is a derelict Higgins Boat. You approach. Inside are a few skeletons, a Thompson Autorifle, three 308 stripper clips, a spare knife (you already have one) and some duct tape.

A: Take all and move on
B: Take all, tape the knife on as a bayonet, and move on
C: Take and leave (choose), and move on

This may be helpful: Obviously, alternative history is going to skew these demographics but here is what we would normally expect.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1930_United_States_Census

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_racial_and_ethnic_demographics_of_the_United_States#Historical_data_for_all_races_and_for_Hispanic_origin_.281610.E2.80.932010.29

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_and_ethnicity_in_the_United_States#/media/File:Census-2000-Data-Top-US-Ancestries-by-County.svg

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mean_center_of_the_United_States_population#/media/File:US_Mean_Center_of_Population_1790-2010.PNG

Its helpful to know what the most populace states and cities would be and the ethnic make up of these places. I don't have an ethnic map of 1930s but the Germans dominated the midwest and great plains like they do today.

Some say there is more German blood in American than British. Its hard to measure though. In Earlier census' "German" included Dutch, Austrians, Germans, and I think Flanders?
