i have mixed feelings on this.

her point is that athletes and entertainers should focus on what they're good at and stop talking about shit they don't understand.

a lot of people have a violent negative reaction to this but she has a point. yes, free speech etc. but they have a loud megaphone and a lot of people/kids look up to them. but they are not experts and often spreading misguided view. i'd say they have a duty to keep quiet unless they really know what they are talking about on some pet cause or something -- like leonardo dicaprio with climate change.

in this particular case, i'm fine with it. they were not talking about how to fix america or any deep issues. they were just criticizing the oompa loompa for saying ridiculous shit and remembering when they used to be able to have respect for our presidents. and talking about the racism they still experience even though they're rich and famous.

that's ok. they can speak to that. they aren't spreading misinformation. they're just reinforcing what anyone with four brain cells already knows. other famous people should learn from this. don't try to act like some kind of political expert, but if you want to say how you feel, your experience -- go for it.

How is "LeBron" even a legit English name or a legit name in any civilization?

I mean, what the hell does it even mean? All legit names mean something..Be it an English name, an Arabic name, a Russian name, a Japanese name..

For example "Ivan" means John in Russian, "Hassan" means handsome in Arabic. What does "LeBron" mean then?

black people often make up their own names. so you're basically criticizing that practice, rather than 'lebron'

demarcus, jadavius, lavonte, nashandra etc. they had creative parents, the names don't mean anything.

^^This is an absurd phenomenon that actually exists in America. After all human names actually exist for the purpose of self-identification and communication. Hence it is not a good idea to have really weird names.

there are millions of people named John. very few named lebron.

your hangup with names having meaning is weird. that doesn't mean anything in todays world, even if it did 2,000 years ago.

Names dont have to mean anything. I doubt that most people with children delve deep into the origins of the name they will give their child.

I will take some time to ponder upon which name I should give to my children, as I have observed a subtle correlation between a name and the personality of those who bear it.

The women I know to be named Ashley tend to be dumb bitches. The Brads are dumb idiots. Those with names that are not common in the generation tend to be decent people.

There are exceptions to this, especially since it is not the strongest correlation to exist. Tyrique is a black fellow at my college. Staunch Black supremacist. Donald is the POTUS, and is a moron. In any case, I'm gonna try for a less common name.

Maybe that's less of a reflection of a name and more of a reflection of the sort of parent that would name their kid Ashley.

Unusual names would be more common if there wasn't a stigma surrounding it.

You name a child at birth. Therefore names are meaningless even when the name has a supposed meaning.

Nicknames can have actual meaning, names typically cannot.

I don't mean that names don't have origins or interpretations, but they don't say anything about someone because they're chosen before anything about the person is known.

As for the OP. I don't think she was being racist. I do think she was being ignorant.

Shut up and sing, shut up and dribble, shut up and act, etc. are all basically ad-hominem. She's suggesting that they are one-dimensional people only capable of doing one thing and suggesting that they have no business doing anything other than that one task and tat their actual views aren't worth responding to, because as musicians, actors, and athletes their views are irrelevant.
