We get some rules to follow.

These and those.
No ONE! knows.

(3-3) ONE! - Muli
(3-3) |GG| - fireice82

Games finished since last week:

master of desaster (Masters) defeats Cluster (M'Hunters)
https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=15751476
Apparently, master of desaster vs. Cluster finished about 2 months ago, but nobody noticed. This means that master of desaster wins the tournament with a whopping 5-1, losing only to the number 2 of the tournament. A bloody good job, MoD, so congratulations. I would review the game, but the last time i played elitist africa was when the template was being tested and even then i couldn't make enough sense of it. So you'll have to watch this one yourselves.

1v1 Strategic Greece

(5-1) Outlaws - Edge
(4-1) |GG| - MIFRAN
(4-2) M'Hunters	- hobo
(2-2) Master Clan	- Timinator
(2-3) ONE! - PJ
(2-4) Lynx - Timon92
(0-6) VS - Glam 'd Slam Islam
Games finished since last week:

Timinator apex (Masters) defeats Timon92 (Lynx)
https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=16264199
The game everyone's been waiting for. These two are the giants upon whose shoulders we may one day stand. This promises to be climax of the tournament, the summit of strategy. The Zenith of Ze German or the heyday of timon's reign.

Nah, just kidding, timon boots turn 1.

Beren apex (ONE!) defeats INSIDE (VS)
You gotta love Beren for his counter in Sporades. Beren and INSIDE start off by expanding vigorously. At the end of turn 2, they look like they're both going to be on 15 income. But, Beren does a 3v2 last move to counter Sporades and it works. Beren prepares to take the north by turn 4 and so he does. He outexpands INSIDE's rather limited expansion options, leaving INSIDE with the only option of stacking while Beren raises his own income. When INSIDE is facing a 23-income Beren, he sees his own 15 isn't going to be of much use anymore and he surrenders.

Edge (Outlaws) defeats hobo (M'Hunters)
https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=16123624
Edge gets the income advantage fast here. On turn 2, Edge with 16 income is facing a 10-income hobo who's looking to complete Dodecanese, worth 5. He does so on turn 3, but gets smashed in Sporades. Pay the iron prince, they say. Next turn, Edge breaks him with a big boy stack, but hobo completes a 4-bonus, facing Edge's income. Then disaster strikes Edge. His 3-bonus gets broken but he fails to trade bonuses and is suddenly behind on income. He desperately tries to either break Macedonia or take over Sporades. For a few turns, he survives with his income deficit and takes over Evia. While hobo is trying to eliminate Edge from the north, Edge sneaks up through Sporades to Macedonia, breaking bonuses. He also takes a 4-bonus and now has the upper hand. The battle is going pretty even for the next ten or so turns. They break some, they take some; Edge constantly has a bit more income and that's what wins him the game in the long run. Along with some good predicts of course.

1v1 Pangea Ultima

(4-0) Lynx - Rento
(4-1) Master Clan	- Rufus
(3-1) ONE! - Malakkan
(2-3) Outlaws - Facetroll
(2-4) M'Hunters	- Emu Pub
(1-4) |GG| - JV
(1-4) VS - Rocky1
Games finished since last update:

Rento (Lynx) defeats Malakkan (ONE!)
https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=16144970
Both players meet turn 1. Malakkan fails to eliminate Rento from Eastern US turn 2 and gets in a position where he faces elimination in Europe. Malakkan correctly predicts that he can eliminate Rento without deploy there now and tries to take another bonus. But, Rento knows. And when Rento knows, he stacks and unfortunately for Malakkan: he knows.

1v1 Battle Islands V

(4-1) Master Clan	- Pardon99
(3-2) Outlaws - Krzysztof
(2-2) Lynx - Timon92
(2-2) M'Hunters	- AI
(2-3) VS - Gibson
(1-2) |GG| - awesomeusername
(1-3) ONE! - FiveStarGeneral

Games finished since last update:

Pardon99 (Masters) defeats Gibson (VS)
https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=16305707
Poor Gibson sees his 6-bonus countered by pardon, just as he was trying to complete it. After such disaster, he tries to expand elsewhere, but Pardon outexpands him every turn and Gibson has to surrender.

FiveStarGeneral (ONE!) defeats Krzysztof (Outlaws)
https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=16305709
In what looked like an interesting and still open game, Krzysztof boots turn 4.

An interesting board with few good picks on it. Emu's triplepick in the north is putting a lot of pressure on Muli and Adreso, but when hobo gets eliminated from Llanos turn 4, the triplepick gets broken too. M'Hunters decide to try a turn or two more, but then Jo Jo got booted. Not sure what happened after that.

https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=16193628
I didn't think I'd see a game in division A where a team didn't mirror picks. 90 goes for a ftb on hungary as his 1,2 and 3 and gets it.
The only thing i'll say is i really dislike this way of picking. Masters seem to dislike it as well, as they break hungary on turn 3. With Master Moto on 12 income and Juan countering an empty norway on turn 2, the game takes a turn for the worst for the Lynx team. And after Hungary gets broken, it's game over.

Dom365 + Juan + 90 \(ºº)/ (Lynx) defeat DarrenDieHard + INSIDE + tobe
https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=16023752
VS focuses very much on the ftb in West Central Russia. Lynx focuses more on the position in center and islands, choosing to counter the Russia ftb. Lynx also gets a first turn austria. After 12 turns of brawling, Dom365 manages to eliminate Russia, 90 has succesfully broken Iceland and Juan has taken over Benelux and Switzerland. They now have a big income advantage and VS surrenders.

Suschel + Muli + Beren (ONE!) defeat Dom365 + Octane + ZeroBlindDragon (Lynx)
https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=15710507
Another game where the Lynx team doesn't mirror. But they're at least closer this time. Suschel completes Norway, Beren completes Western Russia, giving the ONE! team the income lead. Suschel is setting up to take Austria and he does. ZeroBlindDragon tries to counter it but gets predicted. With ZeroBlindDragon having the income, but getting eliminated from center, the Lynx team has a real problem. Octane manages to break Western Russia, but Beren takes West Central Russia in the process.
On turn 8, something bad happens for the Lynx team. While they have broken Norway, Octane gets eliminated from Russia, leaving Beren with 7 uncontested income. ZeroBlindDragon is expanding as fast as he can, stacking his way to the center, but it just isn't enough. When his Eastern Balkans gets broken on turn 12, it's over.

After this week, the scores look as follows:

  • ONE! has a blast this week! They go 4-1, netting them 16 points. They take over Outlaws' spot and fight themselves to third place. That podium place is now a big contest again.

  • Masters Have a great week too. Winning 2 1v1's and a 3v3 without losing anything. They go 3-0 and get 11 points this week. They have taken over Lynx's first place spot. Their total points and max points are both higher than Lynx right now.

  • Outlaws go for an even stevens week. They win one, they lose one. Earning 3 points and losing 3 max points.

  • GG goes for a 0-0 this week. Better than their average score, but they need to get some points going to avoid relegation.

  • Lynx has a mediocre week. Winning 2, but losing 3 games nets them -5 max points and they lose their first place spot. It's very close though, so they better not give up. They go 2-3 this week.

  • M'Hunters lose 2 games this week and win zilch. Their 0-2 score results in their max points going down by 8.

  • VS finds itself back in the last place of the updates. With a disappointing 0-3 they lose 11 max points and they're now officially locked out of the first four places. If they lose one more game and GG or MH wins one more game, they're officially relegated.

Nice update, however:

(1) You made a typo: Juan didnt play in EU against ONE.

(2) Also, you might have missed it but you saw a previous game also when a non-mirror EU strategy was taken (lynx vs MH: https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=15873806) [that time the non-mirror team won], so these arent the first "non-mirrored" EU games we see this division.

(the only reason for the comment in (2) is that I object to the propogation of the seemingly popular view that mirroring is the only good way to play EU. Dont get me wrong, mirroring is good, but there are other ways to play as well. The game against masters was not lost due to non-mirrored picks, but mainly due to our misjudgement in turn 2 in countering empty norway (and turn 3, obviously, but turn 2 was the bigger issue))

Fixed that. Thanks for mentioning.

Of course there are other ways of playing EU. I just think that mirroring is the best way. What the game you linked shows is M'Hunters mispicking and misplaying their game, not a triple-pick on greece or a first pick on czech paying off. Again, just my opinion.

Non-mirroring can definitely pay off in specific scenarios. Triple picking SWR or Poland are examples that I've seen work very well when they are unexpected. Another non-mirror strategy is breaking mirror to try to get one player a Portugal (or sometimes Finland) combo with their 3rd and 4th picks. But these are very situational strategies imo. And the first two triple pick options only really work because they get a player early income that is unexpected and only really works when the opponents get surprised and can't react quickly to contest those bonuses. Mirror picking is definitely the dominant strategy and other strategies are only really useful on the margins.

Yeah, you definitely don't want to get pushed out of the sweet spots during picks and mirroring ensures that. However then again often I see pick outcomes which aren't favorable for one player. Maybe a case can be made to start of mirroring and then at a certain pick stop mirroring. I'm thinking particularly at picks 7, 13 or 19 to break the mirror. If you differ for example from pick 19, only your fourth spot can be effected and maybe you want to ensure that the fourth spots from your team. are spread out.

That being said, I haven't thought this true, just thinking while typing.

The problem with that is that you can't know who will be in which spot in the pick order, so it's not going to be possible to know which picks to give to each player with the late pick in order to ensure coverage for each player. You can try to account for that within the mirror itself though, assuming you're opponents have roughly the preferences for picks.

I'm open to new ideas here, but I haven't seen any reason to break the mirror other than for combos, and even then only in very specific scenarios. I like to make unorthodox picks occasionally, but even then I'm aware that they're likely suboptimal in and of themselves, but can pan out nicely sometimes due to being unexpected.

My point is that if you pick your picks 19-22 (no need for 24 picks) exclusive from your mates you naturally make sure that you don't split them with a teammate. However since from pick 19 on only your last spot can get effected you also make sure that if you get a spot greater than pick 19 all your picks from 19 on are taken by opponents.

The result of this is that you can place your picks 19...22 aggressive in a single area (perhaps around Russia which you have neglected a bit). Also the true power of clustering is pushing your opponents spots to less desirable places and since your higher picks are counters, pushing your opponent there might even be a liability.

When I get two alts up to Level 54, I'm going to try out a modified mirror picking strategy on the 3v3 ladder, which is very different from splitting picks for combos, and also different from Norman's idea. (His idea is interesting and could occasionally be combined with mine - don't think it would come up often, though.)

The idea is to make soft attempts at avoiding unfavourable pairs for the same player and, more rarely, make soft attempts at combos.

An example is that it's usually bad for the same player to get both Switzerland and Benelux. Let's say that on a given board you rate Benelux at somewhere between 6 and 9, and Switzerland at somewhere between 13 and 18. One teammate might pick Benelux 6 and Switzerland 18, while the others pick Benelux 9 and Switzerland 13. Nothing is guaranteed, but it shifts the probabilities in your favour.

This will then have knock-on effects on pick-order for Austria, France etc. and even on other regions via the other picks that you moved up and down, so it will be complicated to implement (hence it has to be tried with alts or puppets first). I won't know whether it is worth it in practice until I've tried it, but I will make a post about it either way.

Although... we already do this sort of thing on 3v3 Biomes, in which you are usually forced to split high picks for combos. I'm sure other teams do it too. But I haven't seen anyone try it on templates on which mirror picking is the standard approach.

Pardon99 (Masters) defeats timon92 (Lynx)
2 FTB's on the board and timon gets two picks in one of them. Only Pardon is next to him so he doesn't go for it. Pardon predicts that and goes for a +4 in two turns. That leaves timon to take his +3 and eliminate Pardon from his spot next to the FTB. In the south both players meet each other on the second turn as well; Pardon has a small stack advantage. Next turn both players stack in the south and timon moves to a double border on Pardon's income. This is where a great predict by Pardon comes into play: Pardon doesn't defend his income at all. Instead, he goes to eliminate timon in the southern +3. Timon stacks there, but not enough. What's even worse for timon, is that Pardon also takes over the +3. And timon flanks instead of breaking Pardon's income. Next turn timon needs to break Pardon and also has to stay alive in the South. This works out for timon, although his stack in the south is facing a much bigger one by pardon, they're at equal income. Pardon eliminates timon in the south on turn 6, but timon takes the +5 right under Pardon's nose. Sadly for timon, Pardon breaks it next turn and it's gg. A beautiful predict by Pardon on turn 4; I'd recommend watching the game.

Games finished since last week:

malakkan (ONE!) defeats rocky1 (VS)
https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=16285647
Both players get their first three picks. They start expanding the first three turns, both risking some 3v2's on turn 3. They both fail one of them. On turn 4, malakkam blind-counters Southern Sahara and it pays off big time. rocky1 was just about to grab it. Turn 5, malakkan grabs a bonus which also gives him a double border on rocky. It's 18v12 income (advantage to malakkan) and positionwise, malakkan has it won. Rocky1 boots.

Rento (Lynx) defeats Rufus (Masters)
https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=16285645
Masters versus Lynx games are going to be key in who gets that desired first place this season. Rento gets the early on income-advantage by going for a risky 2 turn 11. It succeeds though, and the payoff is big. Rento gets a lot of momentum going and on turn 4 it's 17 income for Rento versus 13 for Rufus. But, Rufus has taken a double border on Rento's income in South Africa and a double border on Australia. Rento gets broken in Australia, but predicts correct in South Africa, even taking the double border over from Rufus. Even when broken by Rufus, Rento still has 1 income more than him. On turn 7, Rento predicts correctly again. Rufus pressures Rento in Australia by threatening to take it over, but Rento manages to steal one territory back. Rufus tries flanking in Africa, but Rento predicts the flank and sends a small stack to it before Rufus can flank to it. On the next turn, Rufus takes over Australia but lets rento progress towards his bonus in South Amazon. He fails to eliminate Rento completely from East Asia, but holds a small income advantage now. It all seems in vain though. Over the last two turns, Rento breaks both of Rufus' bonuses and Rufus surrenders. A key game in the league and it was very nice to watch. Rento officially wins the tournament and is the last one to have a chance of going 6-0 in a 1v1 tournament. Congrats!

Games finished since last week:

alexclusive + Rento (Lynx) defeat Suchel + Memele (ONE!)
https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=16215386
After picks, alexclusive has a massive amount of safe income, while Rento is going to be caught up in a massive brawl. Memele gets a safe combo on Middle East and Suschel gets a rather safe East Canada. Rento initially gets Indonesia, but faces both Memele and Suschel who both have a bonus. Meanwhile, Suschel has taken East Canada and is able to push Rento out of Greenland. Rento gifts alexclusive in Africa to put some pressure on Suschel there and eliminates Suschel from Australia. He loses Indonesia tot Memele in the process though. Alexclusive storms through africa, eliminating Suschel from yet another spot. Memele (13 income) and Rento (5) are battling it out in Australia, but alexclusive is making his way to Canada and is stacking towards Middle East. As Memele is unable to eliminate Rento and alexclusive breaks both Middle East and East canada, the ONE! team remains on 9 income for both players, surrendering the game.

Kezzo + Edge (Outlaws) defeat Deadman + Master Jz
https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=16215385
After picks, Jz is looking at a game without income for her. Deadman gets a safe Greenland and a combo on Southern South America, but both Edge and Kezzo are present there. Edge is forced to go for East Africa, but Kezzo is there to help him against Jz. When deadman completes both Southern South America and Greenland, he eliminates Edge from South America; unfortunately Kezzo was waiting in Tahiti and grabs a double border on deadman. Jz gifts South Canada to Deadman and she gets eliminated there a turn later, while also being eliminated in Africa. She now only has two territories left on the board. She starts to run and Deadman lets Kezzo break Southern South America. Masters are now facing an income disadvantage but it's not over yet. Deadman predicts and takes back Southern South America and Jz tries to get some pressure on Kezzo by stacking to Hawai. But with Deadman and Jz eliminated from Canada and Africa, Kezzo and Edge can outexpand them. Deadman takes the whole of South America, but Kezzo and Edge both have borders on him. On turn 10, Edge breaks Deadman with a huge stack and it's gg.

Deadman + Master Jz (Masters) defeat vicnus + rocky1 (VS)
https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=16043262
Deadman and Jz get the whole of South America, which means very quick income for them. Rocky and vicnus have a free Russia and Australia, but get outexpanded. Then vicnus moves to Tahiti. He stacks there next turn, but Deadman transfers Jz. Jz also takes Middle East to increase their income advantage. Rocky blockades Tahiti and Jz blockades the entrance to Middle East. Deadman takes Greenland and the income advantage is only getting bigger for masters. At this point, the game is pretty much over. VS surrenders turn 10.

The standings after this week are as follows:

  • Outlaws have an amazing week, winning 3 2v2's and losing absolutely nothing. They've pushed themselves 9 points above ONE!, increasing their chances of a podium spot. They go 3-0 this week, netting them 12 points and losing 0 max points.

  • Lynx also has a good week. They win a 2v2 and a 1v1, while they lose only a 1v1. They're still in second place, but they're very close to Masters. They're 6 points behind them, but they also have one more game remaining. In terms of Max Points, they are behind by only 1. They go 2-1, resulting in gaining 7 points and losing 3 max points

  • Masters go even this week. They win a 1v1 and a 2v2. they lose a 1v1 and a 2v2. That being said, they're still in first place. They go 2-2 resulting in gaining 7 points and losing 7 max points.

  • M'Hunters don't complete any games this week.

  • ONE! goes negative in terms of points. They win a 1v1 but lose a 2v2. They are 9 points behind outlaws, but keep in mind that ONE! also has the most games remaining. They will be the challengers for the last podium spot, it looks like. They go 1-1, resulting in gaining 3 points, but losing 4 max points.

  • VS loses two games. They're officially last after this week. They go 0-2 losing 7 max points.

  • GG loses two games by not joining; officially the easiest way to get yourself in that relegation battle. Their total points are on par with M'Hunters, but their max points are still a bit higher. If they continue like this though, they'll be the ones relegating.

So we have a battle going on for the first place, a battle going on for the last podium spot and a battle going on for the last relegation spot. It's turning out to be a very interesting end-season. Thanks for reading and buy my new book "GOATs: how to transcend losing".
