what's the point of them?

Technically, they give nothing but a forum, arbitary leader-created ranking systems and an icon next to your name.

Correctly utilized clans however are able to make the game more enjoyable by reinforcing the illusion that the games you're playing are important. It is far more enjoyable to beat other clans than other strangers, and to also defeat other members of your own clan.

Edit: And some clans do offer things, like custom leagues and are willing to help you improve your game.

They can help to foster a community and help you play games with people to enjoy playing with.

They also provide an excellent medium for people to engage in public feuds with others for no discernable reason.
