As a countermeasure to the Crimean referendum yesterday, the EU has levied sanctions against 21 Russian and Crimean officials. This means they cannot travel into or through the EU, and their bank accounts are frozen.

Russian leadership laughs at Western sanctions and hints that there might be countersanctions.
Putin declares in an address in the Russian duma that the West has been playing politics of power in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kosovo among others, ignoring international law. He says that the West thinks they are special and have a monopoly on being right. But now, a limit has been reached. He gets multiple standing ovations.
Official annexation of Crimea will take place on Friday this week.
Now Putin can blame the West for Russia's declining economy, even though the economy would be declining anyway.
