My thoughts are as follows: Switching to drinking water a bit before you want to stop for the night helps. Then your body gets ahead start on processing the alcohol, you start to re-hydrate, and you spend more of your hangover asleep. Versus drinking right up until you pass out, where you don't even get to enjoy the positive effects of your last couple drinks, while delaying the effects of the hangover, and making the hangover that much worse. Then of course its a game of getting hydrated, and eating something nutritious. I like to drink a glass of water before passing out, and have one waiting on the bedside table for when I wake up. Then when I wake up, I try to eat as soon as my stomach can handle anything. Getting outside for some fresh air seems to help too, but I have no idea why. In my own experience, this methodology makes the difference between spending only the morning hungover, or spending an entire day hungover.
